El Hombre
Also the type of powder. Some powders are cleaner than others, as well as having a tight crimp
BLACKFOOT SASS #11947
Light loads are one of the causes for dirty cases, poor or no crimp is another. Different powders can also contribute to the problem of smutty cases. Blackfoot

Cypress Sam, SASS #10915
Tighter crimp, more powder, and heavier bullet. Try various combinations of those.
Snakebite
They have pretty much covered it. The light loads that we use in this game is the primary cause of the dirty cases both inside and out. Shooting a straight walled case cartridge with light loads doesn't build enough pressure to get a good seal, so we often get soot on the outside of the case too. Marshal Chance Morgun
I could be wrong, but I believe you just posted a picture showing your crimp, and if I remember correctly, your crimp was fine. So remind us again what powder and what load you are using.
BLACKFOOT SASS #11947
Lets don't forget about annealing the cases as another way to reduce the smut. I anneal my .45 Colt cases when the smut problem annoys me but havent dont .38 cases. Blackfoot
