When the European settlers came here to the New World, they named many creatures after more familiar animals back home. There was this huge deer with a big rack. They said that that reminded them of an elk so they would call it an elk. Then they discovered that there were elk in this country also. What to do what to do? Obviously we could not have two different species of big deer called elk. Fortunately the Algonquin Indians had a name for the newly discovered elk. They called it a moose.
