Subdeacon Joe
My wife and I are watching the Braves/Brewers game. She asked me "Why is the umpire holding onto the catcher?" "Huh?" Was my erudite response. I started to pay more attention, and especially with a left handed batter it's obvious that he does gently rest his hand on the catcher's back. Is that to help position himself for a more consistent point of view? Seems to me like that would be interfering with the catcher. (I missed my chance though...I should have told her that he's blind, but he can tell by touch and the subtleties if how the catcher moves if it's a ball or strike)
