I have a friend who has a  45 Colt new model black hawk. He says it was made in 1973 and

wants a 45 ACP cylinder for this gun.  I've suggested Gun Parts Corporation.  He says they are too expensive there when they have them.  Any suggestions?

He is NOT gonna find a cheap one. If Numrich has one, grab it!

It is my understanding they are not a drop-in part and will need fitted.
The ones I have are etched with the serial number of the gun they are fitted to.

Ruger will not sell cylinders.  So about the only way to get one is someone selling the extra cylinder out of a convertible gun.  The best place to find them is EBay.

Most cylinders are a drop-in fit. Usually the arbor is a bit long and can be filed/stoned to fit.
