‘BEN HALL HOLDS UP JIM SNOW’
One of the last Cobb & Co. drivers in New South Wales appears to have been a man called Jim Snow. He was in his nineties when he was interviewed by the Nepean Times in 1926.
Jim had a rather unorthodox way of coping with bushrangers on the Blue Mountains run. He would load up with supplies they wanted and leave them at prearranged locations. It was said that he never lost a coin to the gangs.
Jim Snow knew the notorious Ben Hall quite well. On one occasion an elderly lady was travelling to Sydney with Jim, and had a couple of hundred pounds with her. Jim hid the money in a hole in the driver’s seat. It was just as well, because Hall and his gang intercepted the coach.
Jim told him that his only passenger was heading to hospital and was penniless. ‘Poor old soul’, said Ben. ‘Don’t frighten her with any yarn about us. Give her this.’ He handed Jim a roll of banknotes

Enjoying 107°F just now but diminishing.  Will likely beat our previous record of 110° F tomorrow.  Nothing to be done but stay in with enough beer.

It was 37.4°F this morning, which is pretty cold for my neck of the woods.

Can't tell you which extreme is best, hot or cold but here in the Dry High Plaines.   We have hit -40°F a time or two.  A friend 40 or so miles North and East has hit -48° F.  All sorts of things stop working, like a backup Propane generator to run your heat.  Maybe I prefer hot as long as I have water.

You know how somebody will say something and it will push somebody else's buttons? Consider mine pushed.

Couple of days ago Cold Lake Kid said something about -40c. Now Rip Snorter mentioned -40f.

There is no -40c and -40f. It's just -40.

You don't believe me? Go ahead and convert. I'll wait. Convert it in either direction. It doesn't matter. -40 is -40.

You can have -39f. You can have -42c. But -40 is just -40. :P

I think I'd rather pick cold over extreme heat.

I'm not gonna buy a thermometer and move up north just to see if the F disappears when it hits -40. Maybe you could send a video?

‘THE CLARKE BROTHERS’ - 1865
Known by some as the “bloodiest bushrangers”, the Clarke Gang operated in the Braidwood district of New South Wales between 1865 and 1867 led by Thomas Clarke and his uncle Patrick O’Connell.
Brothers Thomas and John Clarke were raised in an enterprising family that included a solid contingent of horse thieves, cattle rustlers, robbers and killers.
The Southern Tablelands of New South Wales was the disreputable pair’s patch, as it was for their immediate and extended family. The clan was as dysfunctional as it was loyal – demonstrated by their willingness to break incarcerated members out of gaol as required.
By 1866 the members of the Clarke family gang, led by Thomas, were declared outlaws. After spending some time on individual pursuits, John joined his brother and the pair wreaked havoc over the course of twelve months, with armed robbery their crime of choice.
In April 1867, following a gunfight with the constabulary near Braidwood, the Clarkes were captured; they were sentenced to death in May and hanged at Darlinghurst gaol in June.
The brothers’ demise saw the end of organised bushranging gangs in New South Wales.
