And both your country and my country could have fit inside the (no longer existing) country Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, which was 8,650,000 square miles.

Again - big whoop.

What's the average speed on those highways? Is there a speed limit, or is the surface the limiting factor?

Common sense speed mostly, lots of camels, and big brahman cattle wandering about. Usually the corrugations are enough to loosen your teeth to make you go slow and if sections are sealed its usually only one car width which necessitates pulling over onto the shoulder at least two wheels while the other vehicle does the same (and hope it's not a 65 meter long road train) if it's been raining, getting those two wheels back on the sealed section can be fun.

The Union of Soviet Socialist Republics was never a country. It was a union of countries.

near as I can figure it was 15 countries.

oh, and I’m sure you have heard of first world and third world. Warsaw Pact nations were the second world.

Much like here in Canada, they are planting a grove of current bushes every 250 miles.

Many decades back, in Great Britain, there were striped posts and laybys every so often on narrow rural roads.  Paved as was the road.  Always thought it was a great idea.

Actually, there is a local company whose hot dogs I buy to give my old dogs their meds.  Saw their baloney the other day and bought some, 4" across, and thick slices.  Add a bit of cheese and tomato sauce or BBQ, not a bad sandwich.  Indistinguishable from Devon, I'd bet.

Nothing like a good, fried baloney sandwich with a little brown mustard on white bread.  Throw in some Kraft Mac & Cheese, a dill pickle, and a Cowboy Hat, and I'm 10 years old again!  Damn, Now I'm Hungry!
