Red Gauntlet , SASS 60619
It's good news. Oz may well need all of those subs (and they also have a good fleet of modern diesels) in the coming decades.

Pat Riot
During Carter’s Folly, or otherwise known as “The Iran Hostage Crisis” my ship sail d with the USS South Carolina CGN-37. I was aboard the USS Virginia CGN-38. At the end of our assignment of cruising around in circles in the IO (Indian Ocean) and the Persian Gulf my ship was permitted a Liberty Call at the Island of Mauritius. The SoCar got to go to Australia! Man, we’re we pizzed! Mauritius?! Australia?! Anyway, we were told that we couldn’t go because we were “a nuke ship”. Hence the “N” in the CGN designation. Nuclear powered guided missile cruiser. I remember telling the Chief “That’s Bull S***, Chief! The SoCar’s a Nuke!” He then reminded me that there were other reasons that I can’t get into here. We pulled into Mauritius and I was promptly assigned to a work detail replenishing the US Embassy with food and supplies. Anyway, our Captain got promoted to Admiral a year later. So he got something out of it.

Trailrider #896
Hmm. Wonder if those will be strictly attack subs or if some will be SSBN's? If so, where would they go to train and test fire their missiles? How far is it from Oz to Kwajalein? Air Force recently fired a Minuteman III from Vandy to Kwaj, with some type of warhead (non-nuke) to test something. Maybe arming and fuzing equipment???? Looks like China is building a bunch of "holes" for ICBM's. World's gettin' dicey again. Need Congress to get off the dime (billions) and authorize and appropriate funds for the Ground Based Strategic Detterant (GBSD) system to replace Minuteman III. RCAF Stations Chatham, NB, Bagotville, QC, Val d'Or, QC, Comox, BC were all air to air. RCAF Stations Lamacaza, QC and North Bay, ON were both surface to air (BOMARC). They (Chinese) are also very p#ssed with this announcement - US to send more planes, including bombers, to Australia under defence pact https://www.abc.net.au/news/2021-09-17/us-raises-concerns-about-china-economic-coercion-of-australia/100469360 That will be alongside the US Marine Rotational Force that is based in Australia's Top End which keeps on growing. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marine_Rotational_Force_–_Darwin

Pettifogger, SASS #32933 Absolutely, also the Japanese coming into Sydney Harbour in midget submarines and shelling the East Coast of Australia from the mother subs (our family residence in Sydney when I was young still had the mountings for the black out curtains on the windows). My Grandfather was an RAAF Wing Commander in Darwin during the bombings and my father was an Australian Army Commando (Independant Company) in New Guinea and had his 21st birthday fighting the Japs in the Salamaua & Lae campaign alongside US forces not long after he'd fought in Wau. Just a side note, my Grandfather was one of the last people to see Amelia Earhart alive, he fixed the radio in their Electra just before take off. He was interviewed multiple times in the 1970's by US authors writing books about Amelia Earhart and he's mentioned quite a lot in the Earhart history in most writings and discussions.
