Marshal Mo Hare, SASS #45984
Oh yes! named Formosa by the Portuguese who discovered it (as if the Chinese did not know it was there). Eventually the Chinese renamed it.
Marshal Mo Hare, SASS #45984
There were an indigenous population on Taiwan. Westerners (we) called them aborigines for some reason, no relation to the aborigines of Australia. They had a language which was dubbed a dialect of Chinese but it was different for sure. When Chiang Kai Shek was being beaten by the Communists he moved his government offshore to Taiwan. Then the language of the island be came Mandarin, the language of Peking, now Beijing.
