Sedalia Dave
The AK and SKS were designed with steel cased cartridges in mind. 7.62X39 has a pretty good taper to the case. This allows Steel Case ammo to be extracted without excessive wear on the extractor as the distance it has to travel before it has released the chamber walls is relatively small. 5.56X45 on the other hand, has significantly less taper, so the case has to travel farther before fully releasing from the chamber walls. This is why shooting steel case ammo in a semi-auto causes the extractor to wear prematurely and be prone to failure.
