#OTD in 1926 during the U.S. occupation of Haiti, Marine Warrant Officer Faustin Wirkus was crowned Faustin II, king of the island of La Gonave, by the natives who believed his unusual name indicated that he was the reincarnation of Emperor Faustin I. He reigned for 3 years before the Marines reassigned him. His story became the basis for sensationalized articles in several men's pulp magazines.
