Private Walter Brennan,  101st Field Artillery.

Supposedly his vocal cords were damaged by mustard gas in France giving him his signature voice.   Britannica claims that is likely apocryphal.

I would have never guessed. Thanks Joe. :)

Once you have the name it's easy to see, but we are so used to seeing him playing an old man we sometimes forget that he was young once.

According to Wiki, there are only three male actors who have won three Academy Awards each:  Walter Brennan, Jack Nicholson, Daniel Day Lewis.  Pretty good company.

One of my favorite movies is: "The Cowboy and the Lady", where he plays opposite Gary Cooper.

Another movie is: "Blood on the Moon", starring Robert Mitchum.

One more is: "Along the Great Divide", starring Kirk Douglas.

Truly the sidekick's sidekick....topping even Gabby Hays.

Good roles all, but for me he will always be Nadine Groot in the original Red River.
