I keep a magazine rack in the bathroom and read magazines while engaged in certain necessary functions.  More and more frequently sometimes I get involved in an article and read for a little too long and my feet and legs go to sleep.  So since a lot of you are also "senior" citizens what do you do to alleve the problem?  Set a timer?  Put an eye bolt in an overhead stud with a rope?  Install hand rails?  I don't have one of those "help, I've fallen and can't get up" devices.  Maybe it is time to consider getting one?  Any suggestions?

I have, only half seriously, considered a rope with a handle hanging from the ceiling to help with the dismount.  Gonna have to get one of those taller thrones I think at some point.

At the same time, I recall deciding that if I did that, I would also need a chain with grips attached to the floor on either side of the commode to have something to grab a hold of when the "work" gets serious....

My previous house, the throne faced the bathtub. When the legs had gone to sleep and I could not stand up, I would rock myself back and forth a couple of times on the throne, and then throw myself forward off the throne, catching the side of the bathtub. I would then hold on to the tub while I straightened my legs, and then stay in that position until the tingling went away.

My current house, the throne faces the door, and is close enough that I can do basically the same thing. I throw myself forward and catch the door frame, and then stand there until my legs quit tingling.

I'm quite glad you asked the question. All this time I thought it was just me. Nice to know it happens to other people too.

I have osteoarthritis in both of my knees, so for my 64th birthday last year, my daughter and son-in-law gave me, and installed a chair height toilet.  Man!,  does that make a huge difference in the dismount!   I would highly recommend going that route!

Had not thought about throne height.  Have not noticed them at Home Deport or Lowes.  I'll look again.

Sort of reminds me of Lethal Weapon when Rog got stuck on the toilet with a bomb under it and his legs went to sleep.  Mel had to save him.

I got a new toilet a couple years ago and it's about 2-3" higher than the old one, which was 55 years old!! Thank God I don't have any problems getting up from the toilet, that must be terrible!:o

Never have seen toilets much taller than standard.  Found a "toilevater"   It's a base to install under your existing throne.  About 4 in rise.  Nice neat install and easy to clean around.   Due to poor back, replaced the towel bar on the wall with a handicap rail.     GW

Just got back from Lowe's.  They had the higher toilets.  All the different brands call them "chair height" toilets. I was trying one on for size and was unceremoniously escorted from the store.

Do they have them down on the floor at your Lowe's? I was considering them a few years ago, and was looking at them at Home Depot. All of the ones that were out of the box we're sitting up on shelves, about face level. That does me no good.

If they recommend that I buy toilet x, because toilet x is 2 inches taller, so it's easier to get up off of, they need to have a standard toilet and toilet x sitting on the floor side by side so you can try that and see.

It wasn't the trousers.  It was the magazine.  I whipped out a copy of Guns & Ammo and that is all it took.

Yeah, it’s not like Walmart where someone might be tempted to use it.

Lowes has them elevated, maybe belt level here.  The other big store here has them on a 6" platform and shrink wraps the bowl like a drum.  It stops kids from leaving presents for the employees.

At big stores you can place an order for 2" to 3" taller than standard.

Now in Japan they seem to test everything.

Toilets.

Taller is easier to get up from.

Shorter makes the job at hand go faster by aligning your inside parts for smoother faster operations.

To try test for yourself before deciding.

You can elevate your feet on a small box of 2" to 4" tall.

You may find you no longer need your library in the bathroom.

Got one elevated seat and one standard height which will get swapped out by year's end.  I also have helper bars in my shower and am seriously thinking about putting some on either side of the toilet.

I used to hate those taller thrones, but now that I'm a little older, I appreciate them. We do have a window sill on the right and a shelf on the left to help me up, but we will probably upgrade in the next couple of years.

My son-in-law's mother lived with them. In the bathroom she used they had put a taller toilet seat on it. The seat was about 4 inches high. I used it while I was there, because the other bathroom was upstairs by the bedrooms. I did not particularly like it because the top of the seat was indented for your legs - like finger grooves on a pistol grip. If they fit your legs that might be wonderful, but mine did not fit in the dents.

But maybe someone makes a tall toilet seat that's just shaped like a toilet seat on top.

Actually that's something I need to look into. B)

Something like this

Better check to make sure you haven't broken the Beeswax seal, connecting the toilet to the soil pipe. You could have a leak.

SWMBO has done that, due to the TIAs she has suffered and affected her legs and balance.

We have handicap bars at the toilets and an upright pole with a moveable swing arm to aid her getting up an well as grab bars in the shower and tub.

Saver her from a couple of falls, but not all.

Put magazines you WON'T get involved in!!!

With legs asleep, the other 'help' items won't do much good.

Having a childs step stool for the potty (has a curve in it that set flush with toilet pedistol) will put your legs in a non dangleing position...and keep you from leaning on your knees as you read.

Give it a try.

Also, I love you, so please install the handrails on your toilet seat.

Both arms, each side...this might also help...resting on arms of seat instead of knees!!!
