Magazine springs

Folks

I am going to replace my steel magazine springs with stainless steel springs in my Uberti 73 and my Marlins.  A couple of questions:

Is there anything special I need to know or do?

Who do you recommend getting the springs from?

Thanks in advance

I use springs from Long Hunter Supply.

Marlin in .44 or .45 -

Uberti in any caliber -

Need to know?  If you have a 30" barrel, you will need something special.

Buy from a reputable dealer, and most stainless springs will work well.    A spring made for a 24" Uberti barrel - will need to be snipped to be shorter if you want the action of a 20" barrel (or less) gun  to run smoothly and easily.  Snip it so the spring is about 4" longer than the magazine tube when it is free of load.   That's plenty of tension to put on a magazine stacked full of cartridges.

good luck, GJ

First things FIRST.  As soon as you get the End Plug, and the  spring and follower out of the rifle, seriously clean the RUST out of the tube.  Trust me.  Rust was included as a no-cost factory option.  Then coat the inside of the Magazine Tube with BOSHIELD, a rust preventing lubricant (dries dry).  Then coat the threads of the End Plug with anti-sieze lubricant.

Springs that fit either the Uberti or both sizes of Marlins - from the inventory of The Smith Shop, now at Online Outpost

Cowboys and Indian spring - short, for 20" Uberti or even shorter:

Yes.  I used steel wool around a brush to polish the inside of the tube well.  Then I coat the spring and inside of the tube with a good rust preventative.  Boshield worked will for me in the past but I've had better luck using Frog Lube or Seal 1.  Another pretty good option is Eezox.

When I go out in light rain for a match, the polished metal on my 97 magazine tube would normally rust in a day or two.  I tried several things including wax.  They helped a lot,  but with the Frog Lube I can shoot in the rain for several days and see no rust on it at all.  You do want a true dry-lube product such as these.
