I second this. Jim Bowie will be happy to advise you on the best course of action. That's if he doesnt offer a replacement.

Jim was unable to tell me the steel used and did offer a replacement but the lifter in the rifle was replaced once already and this arm did no better then the last they bend really easy and I want to try to get them to last better my older kits from him did not have this issue I don’t know if it’s the new products are being made by a different manufacturer for him but the seem softer

If you are bending the lifter arm, you are HAVING SERIOUS COLLISIONS (with the bolt, most likely).   The lifter weighs couple ounces, a slug maybe half ounce, and add another few ounces for fouling that you need to blow through.   That's NOTHING for the lifter arm to have to push against.  

 

Take your gun to a good cowboy smith and let him discover what is colliding or binding hard.

I totally agree with GJ. There should not be any significant load on the lifter. There must be some other timing issue that is not correct. I don't believe the lifters are hardened in the first place, there is no need for them to be.

Lifters are hardened try filing one to time it. The gun timing is where it needs to be. a out of battery caused the bend but you are missing the point the arm bends real easily as if not properly heat treated jim says he has them treated to a Rockwell hardness of 35-40 he sources the work out just seeing if anyone has re heat treated one. I will normalize and re harden the part but wanted a idea of what temperature to heat treat to without Jim being able to tell me the steel it is made from I will guess

It's actually a pretty good design, I'd say, if the lifter arm bends before the lever or the toggles - either of those are 3 times the price to replace.

 

I've not found it very hard when I've fit C&I lifter arms.  In fact, I have to go easy with the file or I can cut the contact pads too much.

 

My guess would be it's something like an AISI 1040 steel.

When talking about steel heat treatment, it is important to all be using the same terminology and ask the right questions.

Below is a short article that will help folks understand different types of metal strength, hardness and flexibility.   

 

 

Strength, Rigidity & Hardness - What's The Difference?

Strength

.. Strength is a measure of a material’s resistance to permanent deformation or complete breakage under stress. Strong materials are able to resist heavy impacts, and are able to absorb and distribute large amounts of energy without breaking. A material’s flexibility does not reflect negatively upon its strength, as even the bendiest materials which resist breakage are technically very strong, without being particularly sturdy.

In metals, strength can be increased in several ways. Quenching can be performed to tighten and strengthen a metal’s crystalline structure, and tempering can be used to remove any weakening tensions within the metal. Tempering is often used to remove the stresses caused during quenching. Components such as 12.9 Hardened Steel Cap Head Screws are both quenched and tempered for optimal mechanical properties.

Strength is measured in several ways - two of the most common measurements are tensile strength and yield strength:

  • Yield Strength - The amount of force a material can withstand when pulled from opposing sides without suffering permanent deformation.
  • Tensile Strength - The amount of force a material can withstand when pulled from opposing sides without completely breaking. Also known as ultimate tensile strength.

Rigidity

Rigidity, also called stiffness, is a measure of elasticity, and represents a material’s resistance to permanent deformation. Rigidity is closely related to strength, but differs in that brittle materials can be rigid, but not strong, and softer malleable metals, such as lead, can be strong, but not rigid. Rigidity is a material’s resistance to bending, whereas strength is a material’s resistance to breakage.

Rigidity is measured by finding the Young’s modulus of a particular material. The Young’s modulus is measured by dividing the stress acting upon a material by the strain which it undergoes.

Hardness

Hardness is a material’s resistance to surface deformation. Harder surfaces are subjected to greater internal stresses, and have a tendency to increase in brittleness, often relying on unhardened internal material for their structural strength. As hardness is only a resistance to surface deformation, it is often only improved at surface-level, as treatments which significantly increase core hardness can also cause brittleness. Hardness can often be easily altered by surface treatments such as case-hardening or plating.

Hardness is measured in a range of different ways. One of the most common methods is by indentation, which calculates the force required to leave an indented mark upon the surface of the material. Various types of Hardness Testers are available for measurement against a range of hardness scales:

  • Brinell scale - The first standardised hardness test. Uses a relatively large spherical indenter which can measure uneven surfaces.
  • Rockwell scale - Uses a conical or spherical indenter. Less destructive and faster than the Brinell scale.
  • Vickers scale - Uses a square-based pyramid indenter for a high-accuracy reading.
  • Shore durometer scale - Uses a range of indenter shapes for different hardnesses. Often used for rubbers and plastics.

Relationship Between Strength, Rigidity And Hardness

Strength, stiffness, and hardness are all important considerations when choosing the ideal material for an application. The various benefits of each attribute should be carefully considered for every application, as one trait often comes at the cost of another, and materials which break this rule, such as diamond, are rare, and are often incredibly valuable for that very reason.

For instance, the notably delicate material glass is an unlikely favourite in certain high-performance cutting applications. The enormous surface hardness of glass allows it to be machined to a much sharper, harder point than metal alternatives, which makes it a favourable material in applications where its positives outweigh its negatives, and where strength is not the only factor to take into account. These super-sharp points, which are typical of glass’s extreme surface hardness, are also why glass creates such dangerous shards when broken. Hard (yet very brittle) volcanic glass scalpels are now used in some of the most demanding applications, such as microsurgery, where softer (but stronger) metal tooling does not cut as cleanly into soft tissues.
