Goofy things pets do.......add yours.

To kick things off, our chihuahua has a thing about the dishwasher. She's not afraid of it, but everytime we open it she has to run to investigate. Acts antsy.

A little yorkie-pom my wife had when we married went bananas barking and trying to get the windshield wipers riding in the car. Before we married she said she once drove 5 hrs in the rain from Clovis NM. Peanut 'bout drove her crazy!

We have an enclosed patio, our front door opens into it as does one of the front windows.  One end of the couch butts up to the wall under the window. We have a small couch un the patio under the window.

I  had taken the screen out to clean it and wash the windows and it struck me that we could use it as a  pass through- if Lisa was on the couch in the patio I could hand he drinks,  books, etc. through it.  Started leaving it open.   Then one day to give our toy poodle a new challenge I tossed a tennis ball through it.  It  took a  few days for her to get the idea that it was OK for her to go through it.

She greets me at the door into the carport when I get home from work.   Then jumps through the window into the house so she can then go through the front door and we can go out and I throw tennis balls for her.  She fetches the ball, goes into the patio,  up on the couch,  through the window,  sets the ball on the floor,  then back out through the window,  out the door,  and is in a full sprint as I throw the next ball.

Part of the process

Had a chihuahua mix who attacked wind shield wipers and washers, and would go nuts trying to kill the brushes in the car wash.

Sasha doesn't understand direction of travel.  Our house faces north.  A cross street runs along the west side.

The dog watches out the front door, in cool weather.  When southbound joggers, walkers, bicyclists pass by, she barks until they disappear from view then sprints to the back yard, barking to make sure they don't jump the fence.  When the passers by are heading north, she does the self same thing.

Oh well.  Must be entertaining for her.

Daisy is new to us. Many quirky things...but the one that sticks out is her 'baby' , a squeeky toy, has to go to bed with her...and MUST go outside to potty in the mornings with her.

She will continue to go back for it if you try to keep her away! Silly pup!

My dog Maddie has a bunch of toys, but she has this soft plastic ice cream can be that she babies and watches over. If anyone touches it or moves it she gets all excited and goes and checks it to make sure it’s unharmed and safe then she takes it to her bed and leaves it there.
Also, I have tried and tried to get a photo of her with here ice cream cone in her mouth and she always puts it down out of camera shot when I try to get a photo of her with it.
Silly girl.
Here is her ice cream cone in her bed. It’s old and faded:

Here is our Maddie. She turns 9 this week.

Another thing she does is she removes all the squeaky thingies from all her toys, except for the one in her ice cream cone. :D

This may be an ongoing list as I remember them but Custer has quite a repertoire:

  • "Sings" when my wife practices the violin
  • Has to have Ice Cream and Whipped Cream whenever it is removed from the freezer or refrigerator
  • When we have guests, he will go in the guest room and steal socks, either loose ones or he will rummage through their suitcase to find them
  • Pokes me in the ribs when I am at the computer and he wants to play or go for a walk - usually the walk is just for fun.
  • Does his "Bunny Dance" (named after Snoopy's Happy Dance) when he is on a leash and sees bunnies, deer, lizards, etc.
  • Is obsessed with lizards. When he goes to play with other neighborhood dogs, all he will do is hunt for lizards instead of play.
  • He will chase deer, rabbits, etc. if he sees them while off leash.
  • Goes wild when he sees cows.
  • Loves to play in the snow and rain.
  • Loves to ride in the side by side.

Long story but while on vacation long ago we rescued an orange Pomeranian on the way home. First day in the truck it would paw your arm when it had to pee.  The second stop of the day we walked the dog and then put it in the cab while I was refueling and the wife went to the bathroom. Went inside to pay and when I came out and approached the truck the dog started snarling and snapping like it had rabies. Waited for the wife and he did the same thing when she went up to the door.

Took off my shirt to use to corner the dog as the wife opened the door. As soon as the door opened the dog instantly stopped and started wagging its tail.

Guess the previous owner taught him that as he did it every time.

My two Yorkie's think the tv is a window. If they see a cat, a dog, or other animal on the screen, they immediately run to the back door an when we let them out, they will search the yard for whatever they saw on tv.

My Dad had a mutt that would get between him and the tv and bark when another animal (land animal- I guess that Daddy was on his own when it came to sharks) came onto the screen and would prance proudly back over to where he was laying on the couch when pic of the animal came off of the screen like he'd ran it off and showed it who was boss.

He made watching Animal Planet and the Discovery Channel quite interesting.

If you have ever watched Kelly’s Heroes there is a scene where Harry Dean Anderson is singing a song about going to town and his dog Blue. When he sings “Go on Blue, you good dog you” all the guys howl.
One day when I was watching that movie as soon as that song played I stopped the video grabbed my harmonica and started trying to play that song.
Our dog Blue, a jet black lab mix, commenced to howling something awful as I played that harmonica.

So, when my wife and daughter came I sang the song and then commenced playing the harmonica part and Blue did the howling part. It was hilarious.
I didn’t do it very often as I figured the harmonica must hurt his ears.

We used to have a cat that would watch TV, esp. if there were animals. Sometimes she'd get on top the TV (crt type then) and paw at them.

Here is a video of Harley, a dog that was at the shelter I volunteered at.  Harley loved his ball and he would start playing with at 6 am according to the volunteers who did the morning feeding and others have said he would be out there at 10 pm playing with the ball.  I would have adopted Harley in an instant, but he needed to be the only dog in a home and my Jack Russell Terrorist would not have tolerated him anyway.  Harley did get adopted and he was described as part Yellow Lab, part Pit Bull and part Shar pei.

When I'm going to play with April in the house I go around and gather up tennis balls from where she has stashed them.  I  can usually find 6 or 8.  I use a cane to just knock them into a cluster on the floor.  As I'm getting onto the  floor (we play by me using the cane to knock them downthe hall) she counts them.  Pokes each one with her nose, then stands looking at them and bobs her head a little as she recounts them.   At least we think she is counting them.   Nothing else makes sense of that behavior.

Our current Pom likes to bark at animals on TV and anything red that moves. Occasionally she sees the reflection of the TV in the glass of one of the pictures on the wall and barks at it.

My Lab would fart so loud it would wake her up with a start. She would then leave the room with an embarrassed look on her face.

Yeah, they can look embarrassed. :D

I haven’t had a dog yet that wouldn’t bark when someone on TV rang a doorbell. Such a strange thing.

I've spent almost 30 years living with Jack Russell Terrorists and most of my life around dogs, including 6 1/2 years volunteering at a shelter/rescue for dogs which is very much a crash course in all things Dog.  Skipping breed specific traits, most dogs are reasonably predictable and the average dog owner will usually have pretty good idea what their dog will do in most situations.

It's been a bit more then 10 years since I adopted Kenzie, my current JRT  and I've never understood a dog less and even now she will surprise me with some new reaction or behavior.  It's a culmination of lots of little quirks and weird reactions, but here is an example.  I was feeding her a dry dog food that contained peas, which she did not like.  However instead of leaving the peas in the bowl, she would take them with her mouth and place them outside of the bowl, all in one place.  Kenzie is also very talented at taking a pill pocket or treat with a pill inside of it, eating all of the pill pocket or the other food and leaving the pill behind.

My wife's cat used to argue with her and would keep muttering a "Meow" quietly as she would refuse to let my wife get the last word!

My previous JRT, Oreo, would eat her dinner, come charging into the living room, jump on my lap and let out a huge burp in my face and if you laughed her while she licked your face (and it hard not to most of the time) she do her very best to stick her tongue all the way your throat.

SWMBO and I have had a number of different pets over the 53 years we've been married, starting with Fleur, shortly after we were married, a baby skunk we adopted after her mother was killed, by a car We fed her with an eye dropper and a formulae a vet neighbour designed for her.

(Yes, she was disarmed by Roland, our vet!)

Fleur liked to cuddle with us for a while, when we went to bed, but would get up in the night and start chasing her ping-pong balls around the house.

If one or the other of us got up for trip to the bathroom, she would escort us back to bed and stay for a while, before resuming her ping pong chasing.

Walking her on a leash was always funny, but walking her as a kitten, on the sidewalk or pavement in our neighbourhood was OK and she would behave nicely, but when she got onto grass, she would start to bounce around like Pepi Le Pew.

She stare up at our budgie's cage when Timothy Alois would start yakking but never seemed to try to stalk him when he was out of the cage.

We had to put her down when she was 8, due to cancer.

That was a sad day around the house.

Another time I'll relate the story of Timothy, the drunk.

Yeah i agree.  How do you teach a dog to do that?  I want all of my dogs to start doing that.

No teaching involved; he quickly grasped the connection between eating and getting his bowl filled, and we didn't have to show him how one led to the other.  Dog was smart as a whip, and a big cuddle buddie.  Loyal to a fault.

I've got one inside cat and one outside cat - sorry, Waddles, just the luck of the draw. So when Waddles comes inside now and then, he washes his front paws in the water bowl before he drinks or eats. He does the same thing outside. Maybe he fell in with the raccoons out in the woods...?

Peanut the windshield wiper chaser had a bunch. She would attack both the vacuum and the lawn mower. Had to shut her inside to mow. She also had this stuffed mouse (teddy bear sorta thing) that was about 3x her size that she liked to hump. If you didn't leave it on the floor she'd find where it was and cry til you got it down. She was fixed so that's all she ever got. ;)

Our German Shepherd/Husky knows exactly when it's 6:00pm, dinner time.  She will go to wherever Uno is and start herding him until he picks up her bowl off the tray and heads to the food bin.  She will actually walk in front of him if he tries to head anywhere except where the bowl is.

Our male cat Washburn sings..........loudly.............to himself.  He will start singing, sometimes in the middle of the night, because he's lonely or such and one of us will have to quite him down or Zoe the little female will bat him until he quits.

Coming home once I found a SICK kitten at a roadside park. I figured the thing to do was stomp its head or take it home. I took him home, really expected him to die on the way but he didn't. Named him Yoda cuz I figured The Force was surely with him seeing as how I really don't like cats. First few nights he slept in the litter box. Saved getting up to go potty I suppose.
