Subdeacon Joe - Lookie what I saw in my backyard this morning

It’s called a Pintailed Whydah. After I saw it and photographed it I did some research and it turns out to be a very “parasitic” bird that is very aggressive and will run off other birds. Website won’t go so far as to say the birds should be disposed of but there is concern regarding what they would do  in taking over an area.
They are native to Africa and non-migratory. Those that are found in the US are most likely birds released by an owner of exotic birds. So, I guess if one of these birds show up at your feeder it might be best to find a way to run it off or make it nonexistent.

I was so excited when I first saw the bird, photographed it and then started this thread…

Anyway, here it is.

Looks similar to our Scissor-tailed flycatcher we have where I live. Very beautiful bird. But I don't believe they are in the California area.

Sounds like a candidate for wrist rocket practice.   Thanks for the heads-up.

Someone must have had it and got tired of it.

Yep. Probably. At first I was pretty excited to see it. I figured it was a migratory bird from Mexico. Then I read up on it.

Here are some links including photos of the female of the species.

Sure looks like a Magpie

It’s actually small. I that other bird in my photos is a male House Sparrow, I believe.

@Subdeacon Joe,

Of course you haven't seen anything until you've spotted a mother Wrench feeding her young! :P

I’d inquire SD Zoo wants it.

That’s not a bad idea. I might just call them if I see it again.

I have only seen it once.

Maybe you should call the Fish and Game Office and see if they will come out and get it?
