Chow time pome alert

Recommended Posts

It’s the breakfast of Grunts and manly-type men
I remember it well from when I was in
A young kid in the mess hall all those years ago
At zero dark thirty all ready to go
Smell of strong coffee floats down the chow line
Hustle it up boys, we ain’t got much time
It’s beef from a steer and milk from a cow
Ask your daddy about it and he’ll tell you how
He had it in Benning back in March ‘42
And in France, years before, his daddy did too
Grab some toast and scoop it up outta the pan
It’s SOS, son. It’ll make you a man

I actually enjoy it.

Colour me strange??

If you’re strange then I am too, especially if there was a little Tabasco to splash on the pile.

SOS always made a good start to my day. Way better than those green eggs and ham.

Looks like sausage rather than chipped beef.  Not complaining.  I would eat either one.  Just curious.  (and jealous.  we are doing the intermittent fasting thing; no breakfast.)

Back when I was at Ft Bragg in the early 70s.I would have my mother send me a case of green chili's just so I could have it with my breakfast. The Mess Sgtalways wanted what was left.

It is the official Amy Quartermaster Corps recipe which specifies ground beef. Chipped beef is a tips ally the Navy recipe. I usually use less than 18 lbs of beef in mine. ;)

If it is made with spicy sausage & ladled on biscuits I'll eat it.  Mom made it with salty chipped beef & like creamed peas or peas & carrots I never ate it after I married in 1967.  I think I tried it once in Basic Training & it was too bland to bother in the future.  The lack of taste is not enough to overcome the picture in my mind of the contents of an infant's soiled diaper.
