Recipe needed for HS6 powder

Anyone use HS6 for .357 loads? If so, do you have a recipe for .357 using HS6 with 158 gr bullets? I've got a bunch of HS6 & would like to use it to load 158 gr in my rifle.

Thanks

HS-6 powder is listed in the Lyman Cast Bullet Handbook, 4th Edition.   But, the velocities for even a lead bullet range higher than you probably want for cowboy shooting.

For a 158 grain cast bullet,

HS-6 with 9.2 grains of powder makes about 1150 FPS from revolver (starting load)

And with 10.2 grains of powder, makes about 1250 FPS (max load shown).    !

Now, in .38 special load data, there's a much tamer velocity range:

For 160 grain cast bullet (so close to 158 as to make no real difference):

HS-6 with 4.5 grains of powder makes about 600 FPS from revolver (starting load)

And with 6.7 grains of powder, makes about 900 FPS (max load shown).

From that, I'd start with about 6.5 grains of HS-6 in .357 cases with 158 grain bullet, and work down lower until you like recoil and completeness of powder burn.

If you have unusual muzzle reports or any hang fires or squibs, you should certainly not go to lower powder levels.

good luck, GJ
