Alpo
I've heard of Kobe beef, which is both Japanese and extremely expensive. But WAGYU?? Sounds like it's part of the dog. Okay. I just went and looked it up. It's like champagne, or cognac. If it did not come from Champagne or from cognac, then it can legally only be called sparkling wine or brandy. If this did not come from Kobe, it cannot be Kobe beef. The same breed of cow raised the same way is wagyu beef, which apparently means Japanese cow. Singin' Sue 71615
Waygu...the most expensive (possibly most tender) It is what our NM Gov was spending the budget set aside for NM events to promote NM. She instead was buying this, alchahol and other items with that money. Oh...also a doggie door and carpet cleaning from HER dogs messes at the Gov mansion. Nice, huh? Utah Bob #35998
Japanese Wagyu is mongo expensive and the same as Kobe beef. But there is American Wagyu for less $. It is crossbred with angus. But the regulations on calling something Wagy seem to be lax in this country. if you look at Kobe or Wagyu you can see the amazing marbling. I find it interesting that the nation which hardly ate any beef at all before WWII, now produces the top of the line.

And that isn't that much more than it was when I was in Japan 45 years ago, if you adjust for normal increases.

Subdeacon Joe
On one of the Food Network competition shows, I think it was a High End Chopped competition, one of the contestants was from a Las Vegas place that specialized in Wagyu beef. I looked it up online, checked the menu. It was $100 per OUNCE, with a 5 ounce (might have been 4 ounce) minimum.
