Singin' Sue 71615
What did you read in the handbook on required dress? Does it say Felt COWBOY hat....or just Felt hat???
Joeronimo Caffiend
The word "cowboy" does not appear in the section on hats, just "felt".

Singin' Sue 71615
On the 'serious' side... The dress is meant to be that of the Roy Rodgers/Dale Evans BLING... BWestern folk take their outfits to the extreme... Wear the hat...just not in BWestern
Sedalia Dave
Read the entire section on B-Western in the SHB and it is obvious that that hat doesn't even remotely fall within the guidelines. I don't understand why people want to shoot in the costume categories yet they don't want to adhere to and comply with the spirit of the rules. Rather they look for loop holes they can squeeze through. Nothing precludes any one from wearing a costume in any of the non-costume categories. Cypress Sun
Not trying to insult you, keep that in mind when I tell you this....I personally wouldn't wear a dumb looking hat like that in public, let alone a cowboy match... even in B Western. Years ago, there was a cowboy who was starting out who wore a hat quite like that. After many ,many good natured ribbings, he finally got a real cowboy hat. He was much happier for it. Singin' Sue 71615
There is a gent that was at Land Run, who wears a 'similar' hat...as he is following his Heritage (wich I won't speculate on...but it has a bit of liderhosen (?) )

Dress to your wants and needs, your personna...without wearing the very few outlawed items. Let the specific Costume Catagories do their thing. Utah Bob #35998
Well if you look at historical photos you’ll see a lot of what we would call unconventional hats. What with the large amount of European immigrants in the west that’s perfectly understandable. But B Western is not a historical based category at all. As mentioned above it’s based on the westerns of our youth when fringed and embroidered shirts, silver conchos on belts and saddles, and pants tucked into fancy boots. More fantasy than reality. So that rather avant-garde fashion forward chapeau wouldn’t quite fit the Bill.
Birdgun Quail, SASS #63663
The hat looks like a German Jäger's (Hunter's) hat to me. Perfectly acceptable hat for the Baptist Category. https://www.hutstuebele.com/Hunter-hat-with-wool-cords.html

Anyhow, I'm looking at a big old Sugarloaf now (bandito style); I'll probably settle on a "Gus" however....very traditional.
Cat Brules
Just get a regular Western hat and make sure you have properly blocked so it isn’t inconventional. Overtime, you will be glad you did.....and so will everyone else. Cat Brules

I used to have a green one similar to that with a chamois tail band decoration. Looked great around the ski lodge, but I wouldn't dare wear it around cowboys

The last time I wore a hat like that it was exactly that hat and I was playing in a German polka band. I still have the darn thing and would not ever in a million years wear it to a cowboy match but that might just be me. Of course if my polka band was playing at the cowboy match then I might…
