Warning: Heresy Ahead

Recommended Posts

Okay, the movie was terrible: cinematography style, dialogue, and mediocre editing.

However: Ryan was spot-on and his performance was incredible. Holden was okay, but for the marvelous Mister Holden that means it was excellent compared to any other actor; I still think his best was Stalag 17.  Ernest, what can I say...except it was a dark funhouse mirror performance of Marty.

I'll watch all 144min again at some point, but not for a couple if years I'm sure.

Hmmm...I'd say that his performance in Sabrina slightly, VERY slightly, takes it over Stalag 17.  With The Devil's Brigade giving Stalag 17 a run for 2nd place.

Saying that around here is as dangerous as the time that I said that the 1st Star Wars movie was a bad B movie- while in a comic book shop.

To quote the movie, "you're braver than I thought."

The main reason it is memorable is because it was one of the first movies with graphic blood and guts during the shootout.  In older movies someone gets shot and they grab their stomach and fall over and there is no blood.  Now their stomach falls out and blood splashes all over everyone within ten feet.

There were no good guys in the movie.

Peckinpah’s genius was getting the audience ( some of us at least) to root for a bunch of  criminals.

And the soundtrack was cool.

Ah, I finally know what movie this is about.   Just dropping a few actors names with vague comments doesn't really identify a movie.

I mean, if I were to say Ford's direction was top notch, and Wayne's performance was excellent, but his character was unpleasant and the story painful to watch, would you know what movie I was referring to?

The train sequence is about 18 minutes long with almost no dialogue. And  it works.  Name me another movie that depends on action rather than dialogue for that long.

I'm sensing a little bit of "We'll give you a fair trial, followed by a first-class hanging!' going on here.....

I've never much liked the movie. Realistic violence is one thing, but the wholesale gratuitous slaughter of innocents in the opening sequence I've never liked. I watched the whole thing years ago. I tried again a few months ago and gave up on it.

@Joeronimo Caffiend your opening post kind of reminded me of a Marine buddy of mine telling how when Bob Hope's death was announced on a tv in the bar he was in, some guy said "Who cares?" The bar was full of Marines and sailors...

For whatever reason, when I read the name "Sam Peckinpah," I will eventually start thinking of the very old "stagecoach" comedy routine done by comedian/actor Tim Thomerson. Since this is a family friendly site, I will say no more. If you look it up... Well, that's on you...
