How interchangeable are parts on old S&W lemon squeezers?

I've got a S&W Safety Hammerless, 4th generation in .38 S&W with a 5" barrel. I'd like to get a second barrel that's 4" or less so I can use the revolver in side matches.

If I get a second barrel is it going to "drop in", or will fitting be required?

Thanks for any insights!

Real S&W revolvers are very well made, but you might have to final fit some parts, in my experience.  In your case, getting the latch to fit properly, as I'm sure they were all hand fitted. I've done it a couple of times, just take your time doing it. Make sure you fit the new barrel to the gun, not the other way, or the old barrel won't fit anymore.
