J-BAR #18287
Singin’ Sue’s post about a USPS text scam reminded me of a new one we dodged. We shop a lot at Sam’s Club, and my missus pays the bill. Reviewing last month’s charges she found a $1 delivery charge. We never get home delivery from Sam’s. She traced it back to a dairy product company in Illinois! We showed the statement to customer service at Sam’s and the clerk said it was a phishing scam. If the $1 charge had gone through, she said they would have tried $100 next month. No problem getting it deducted from our bill. I’m grateful my missus caught it because I would have missed it! So, review your credit card charge details carefully! Cypress Sun
Thanks J-Bar, I also shop at Sam's albeit not as much as I used to since they stopped carrying some thing I used to buy. Still go there about once every two weeks or so. I'll be checking the CC statement though!
bgavin
Indeed. After reviewing my monthly VISA statement, I found a charge for a porn site. I contacted Wells Fargo and put a halt on that. They traced the IP address to the inside network of Newegg (computer parts) in Los Angeles. The scammers had gotten my CC on file at Newegg and used it for a porn subscription. I had a strange $199 charge come up on my card but the bank flagged it and called me. The charge should have been much less so my service with them was cancelled. The next day I got an email from them thanking me for renewing my subscription to Antivirus for 5 years and paying $367.99. I called the number on the email and the call was answered “Best Buy, can I help you?” in a very slight Indian accent. I was suspicious. I asked about the bogus charge at the same time I noticed the email address was off. There was a hyphen between “best” and “buy”. More suspicious. The guy transferred me. I heard some clicks over the phone then a guy in a very thick accent answered harshly “What do you want?” I said “I am calling about my Antivirus, is this still Best Buy?” It sounded like I had caught the guy napping on his couch and with this sudden surprise he lurched up and madly cleared off all the junk on his coffee table to take notes or get his laptop open. Lots of grunting and crashing noises. Anywsy, I knew they were scammers so I messed with the guy for a while then hung up on him. I notified Best Buy and they didn’t seem too concerned. I will never buy anything from them again.
bgavin
I have zero use for Best Buy. My middle daughter bought a $2400 hot rod laptop from them. Her youngest destroyed it and blamed it on the cat knocking it off the bed. The good news: she bought the accidental damage warranty as well, so her $2400 isn't lost. Here in Sacramento, BB is about all that is left for local electronics. Fry's went bankrupt.. I was by there a few days ago.. signs are now all taken down, place is locked up. Singin' Sue 71615
We have no credit cards.. but have twice in 22 years found odd charges to our account. The bank was quick to reverse the charges on the first...and this last was someone at Amazon using my card to set themselves up fir an Amazon Prime account. That one required canceling my debit card and issuing a new one. (I don't shop Amazon, but let my daughter use my card...bank assured a third party took the number and started an account) Really hate crooks! TNtrapper
I got hit last month on my CC I use for fuel. I called it in and they put a stop on it. The lady from the card company said it had originated out of GA and they had paid their yearly membership dues at a golf club with it. The lady got tickled when I said " GOLF! Hell Ive never even picked up a golf club"
Chili Ron
Howdy, Golf clubs make handy cheap walkin sticks. Putter especially. Best CR and golf balls make great targets too. The golf guys give me lots of nicked up targets. Hit one right and it goes flying over the berm.....fun.

Muleshoe Bill SASS #67022
Last month someone bought a exercise gym with my credit card and had it delivered to them in Amarillo. $1600 dollars worth, and a felony in Texas. CC company deleted the charge pending investigation. UPS showed it delivered "To the man" at an address they would not disclose. I reported to the police dept. here in Austin and have not heard anything back from them. (geee what a surprise) Cancelled that card and got a new one, and did that with the other card as well. changed all my passwords and just waiting for the next time. bgavin
I figure the CC company bought the scammer a free exercise gym.. with no strings attached. Here in CA, they would say the perp "needed" that gym equipment, so it was OK for him to steal it.

Marshal Mo Hare, SASS #45984
I occasionally go into Best Buy. My grandson worked as a grocery bagger and applied for a BB job about 18 months ago. BB hired him and kept him on after the Christmas rush. his mom, who owns two preschools, said $15 an hour?, I have teachers who don’t make 25 an hour.
