Fast Twist Hawken

If you own, and shoot, a .50 caliber Hawken repro., with a fast twist rifling, say: 1 in 24 in., what conical bullet diameter do you prefer?

I am not interested in a plastic covered sabot conical configuration....just a pure lead hollow based conical.

I plan to measure the bore, with my calipers, to see exactly what they call .50 caliber, to make sure.

So.... .490?  .495?  .050?  .051?

In my .50 caliber, slower twist Hawken (1 in 66 in.), when using a round ball, I use a .490 round ball, with a .015 patch. Never shot conical's out of that rifle.

But I also have a Hawken, with a 1 in 24 inch twist, as well, that I have not shot a conical out of....yet....so I am just wondering what the consensus is.

Thanks for your thoughts/experiences.

W.K.

Not more than .5 if it indeed, is a true .50.  But, as importantly you'll want a heavy for bore slug.  Dead soft lead with full charges will "bump" up the base and seal the projectile to the bore.
