On the subject of Chief Petty Officers

My nephew went from ABHCM to Command Master Chief aboard Stethem and Stennis. Then to Command Master Chief for Carrier Strike Group Three. Now he's Force Command Master Chief for COMNAVAIRPAC. I think the boy is doing OK.

Sorry, Chief Rick, I can't remember all the letters he's had since becoming a CMC. Years ago when he enlisted he was a wondering lad with no compass. I knew the Navy hitch would do him good and figured him for one hitch. The Navy put him on a carrier flight deck, made him an ABH and look what happened. He was only an ABH1 when his Grandpa, my Dad passed on. However, he made 2 old Marines mighty damn proud.

Rank = officers' paygrades. Ensign, commander, admiral, etc. Moving to a higher rank is a promotion.

Rate = enlisted paygrades. Airmen, petty officer 2nd class, chief petty officer, etc. Moving to a higher rate is advancement, or 'making rate'. ETA: because of their advanced enlisted paygrade, chiefs who advance generally consider it, 'promotion'.

Rating = professional specialty. Constructionman, Machinist's Mate, Hospital Corpsman, etc. Except for a few ratings, it remains the same throughout a career. A few ratings merge, usually at the level of master chief (e.g., AM, AME, and AD merge to become Master Chief Aircraft Maintenanceman.

It is possible, but not really common (I knew one in a 25 year career) for sailors in one rating to laterally transfer to a similar rating, depending on similarity of training and (of course) the needs of the navy.

I don't know how it is now but when I was in the Navy to change rating you had to go to a more critical rating. My NEC was 3385, Surface nuclear propulsion plant operator mechanical. That is a fancy term for a nuclear qualified Machinist Mate. At the time I could not change to any other rating. Not that I wanted to I could not have changed to Mess management specialist. Fancy name for a Cook. Not that they are not valuable but it was considered a non-critical rating.

Someone else mentioned  A Machinist Mate, rating is a machinery repair person.

A Machinery Repairman rating is a Machinist.

Go figure.

When I graduated from AE "A school" a bran new AE3 with no Naval experience.  I was assigned to VF-124's VAST shop doing computer controlled testing of electronic gear for the F-14.  Three years later AEs were deemed to not have enough electronic background to be in the VAST program, but I was kept in it.  When I left the Navy after five years service I was an AE1 with a NEC of 0000.

You should be proud, being a CMC is a demanding job, but as a FORCM he’s got a lot of responsibility.  Not to mention he’s got to be darn near an expert in politics, FORCM’s are hand picked by the Admiral they work for.  YUT or HOORAH Devil Dog (depending on your years of service)

Chiefs are evil creatures who keep pickled eggs/pig's feet/red sausages in the Chief's Quarters. They let loose with vile gaseous expulsions known to subdue charging rhinos. Never stand downwind from these critters.
