What Early Pioneers Ate To Survive The Old West

Thanks for sharing. I was thinking the meal around the campfire in Blazing Saddles was pretty common among the cowboys of the day.

Nope, "poisoning."  Also called "protein poisoning."  From a diet too high in protein and too low in fats and carbs.  "Rabbit fever" is a disease caused by Francisella tularensis

You're right - my brain is not working this morning

Not rabbit fever.

Rabbit starvation.

I still ain't never heard of rabbit poisoning. Except when you're trying to keep him out of the garden.

It goes by about half a dozen names.

as a kid i was warned of tularemia and trichinosis with regard to what we might hunt/harvest , it was not an idle concern in my family as we often ate wild game ,

My grandmother once told me, when she was a girl, they made flour out of the mesquite beans, that grew on the mesquite trees.

My grandmother also liked to eat clabber.  I saw her eat that a many a time. No thank you!!!

The video forgot to mention frog legs, but, like as not, in a lot of the places the cowboys worked, there may have not been a lot of ponds, or lakes, around for frog legs....or crawfish, either, for that matter.

Just because those old cowboys may have smelled like a skunk, doesn't mean they had to eat one. I'd vote for a liberal socialist democrat, before I'd eat a skunk! I may be wrong, but I don't believe a skunk has a split hoof, or chews a cud.

Well, I ever get transported back in time I plan to not ask what I am eating and thank the cook with a smile. ;)

I have gotten my fanny warmed several time for not thanking my Mother for a meal.  Simply was not done.

Not 'old West'...but back in the day.

Papaw was born in a Tenessee Holler.

Once they moved to Waxahachie, Tx...he still liked squirell hunting.

During the Depression, momma said there was always meat on the table. (Something she kept true in our upbringing)

Rabbit and Squirell were easy game.

I still cringe when I recall her saying she and her two brothers fought over the squirell's head!!!

More meat and the brain was sweet!!!
