What they're implying is blacks have a hard time with reading music! Tell that to Herbie Hancock, Miles Davis, Louis Armstrong, Wynton Marsalis, Dizzy Gillespie, Lionel Hampton, and a slew of others. These people are insane!

Here's good list of those who would disagree with these fools.  https://www.classicfm.com/discover-music/black-musicians-pioneering-in-classical-music/

Morons.  Everyone has a hard time reading music.  It is its own language.  Unless you are taught to read it, write it and then vocalize it (speak it), it will look like bird droppings on paper.  Even a knuckle dragging Neanderthal (KDN) like me can read, write and vocalize it and I'm nothing special.  I took piano in grade school and learned the basics.  It has nothing to do with race.  They are just making excuses for poor behavior but what can you expect from Brits?

How do you get to Carnegie Hall?  Practice, practice, practice.  That is how you learn any language.

I would say they're making excuses for poor teaching skills and the subsequent failure to perform.

When I was in high school we had a French foreign exchange student that was a classically trained pianist. As in, she had as a teenager performed with various European classical groups. In watching her play, I couldn't begin to comprehend. She ended up doing a duet for one of our concerts with the only student in our school who could come close to her talent. A black friend of mine who many would call a hoodlum or a thug. But he could play piano incredibly well, and was one of our better tenors. I am pretty sure he would be insulted.

Yeah, no racism in England at all.

I just don't understand how people get away with saying what they are actually saying.

"We need to do away with this, because it is racist. Only white people can understand it. Non white people are just too stupid."

As for black composers, a couple of key ones were not on that earlier list:  Scott Joplin, Samuel Coleridge-Taylor and the son of Robert McFerrin (in the earlier link), the incomparable Bobby McFerrin.  There are some others whose music we recognize, but seldom know by name:  https://www.classicfm.com/discover-music/black-composers-who-made-classical-music-history/

Then there is Kevin Olusola, classically trained cellist and composer who is the vocal percussionist for Pentatonix.  He composes in all styles from classical to jazz to rap and can perform it all.

I thought I at least had a clue about how to read music, then I saw some music sheets for a drummer.

Drum music is actually easier since there’s no pitch unless you’re talking about kettle drums. I’m talking about snare and bass drum and drum set.

Absolutely.  That list brings up others for me like Duke Ellington, Bennie Moten, Lester Young, Fatha Hines, Billy Strayhorn, Art Tatum, Teddy Wilson, Chick Webb, Charles Mingus, Joe Brown, Billy Eckstine, Eubie Blake, James P. Johnson, and nearly every member of their bands since most were black.

And I think my black Phi Mu Alpha brothers, Barrington Coleman and David Johnson might also call these Oxford profs fools too.

Oxford Music Professors ........ edjumacated moroons !   <_<

That is part of the problem.  Give them a PHD and they think they are the font of all knowledge.  Just ask them.  They will tell you so.

How about the late, great Ray Charles.  He couldn't read music but was one of the greats.  Arseholes really torque me off.  Makes everyone else look bad.  They might be edumacated but they are not smart.

So many and let’s not forget the fabulous Nat King Cole!

As far as Ray Charles he knew music theory as well as Stevie Wonder.

You just don't know who to believe anymore. Dennis Prager and Dana Loesch and others reported this story a few days ago and now the AP (a liberal org) comes out with this? Hmmm..........Not sure I trust AP but I just don't know anymore!

>which spans works by Mozart and Beethoven, focuses too much on ‘white European music from the slave period.’<

Exactly when was "the slave period"?

Moses, who was born somewhere between 1400 and 1600 BC, was born at a time when the Israelites were slaves to the Egyptians.

Slaves have existed since the beginning of mankind. They still exist, regardless of what people think. The war of 1861 did not do away with slavery. The war of 1861 did away with slavery in the United States. They still got slaves in the Arabic countries. They still got slaves in the third world Oriental countries.

And before WW2 many in the American military leadership were convinced the Japanese couldn’t make good pilots because of their eyes.

Now as far as Jimmy the Greek is concerned,........

Come to think of it, I’ve never been real sure who to believe.

Let's all go back to using medieval neumes for notation, then we can all be equally challenged. :)
