The next two weeks are gonna be brutal...

...having to wait to be able to bring my new toy home.

I decided to spring for one of them new-fangled Smiths with the break-open top. What, wait... you mean it's not a new gun?!? Well yes it is... but it's not.

Cimarron Model 3 American in .45 Colt. I decided to just take the easy route and get one in a caliber I already have ammo for, since the others still don't appear to be out yet anyway. It's an absolutely gorgeous gun and I can't wait until Big Brother finally lets me take it home. It was fun watching the LGS employee try and figure out how it opens. :D

She's got an 8" barrel, an inch longer than my Schofield. According to their website Cimarron will also offer a 5" barrel soon. Available calibers will be .45 Colt, .44-40, .44 S&W Russian, and .44 Special. Like I said I'm cool with the "incorrect" .45 Colt caliber, and I couldn't help but fall in love with the long barrel. Not too practical, but definitely sexy.

A cool gun with authority! :D

I have only shot a top break once. Actually I shot a stage with a pair of top break S&Ws. I liked them, I could just never afford them and once I could they were no longer an option.

I actually shoot my Schofield better than either of my Single Actions. Okay okay... I simply suck less with it than my Single Actions. Of course I've heard plenty of people say the exact opposite so it's just a preference thing.

And yes, one of these beauties will cost you the same as TWO Uberti Single Actions. I didn't care... I had to have it, and with a little "free" money courtesy of Uncle Joe my mind was made up easier.

I got mine yesterday after a very long wait.  I ordered it at the last Winter Range. Had to settle for a .45caliber because there just weren't any .44 Specials available.....and I have other guns in .45 and plenty of ammo already.

I had asked for one with an 8" barrel and nickel plated.  I was told that there would be NO nickel plated ones until the next batch.....some day..... came in.  Guess what!  Mine is nickel plated with some of the pins and screws fire blued.  Also, it has checkered grips of some amazingly pretty wood for a clone.....and it only cost me $350.00 more than a plain blued one.  Oh, well, it's only money.  (I wonder if I'll ever be able to say that with a straight face.)

My only problem is that I forgot that it is impossible to handle a nickle plated gun without gloves because finger prints can be seen from a hundred feet away.

I'm working on getting some pictures up and I'll try to shoot this weekend if the weather breaks.  No waiting period in Arizona, so it could happen tomorrow.

But... Two Weeks?

You have a TWO WEEK "cooling off" period...??

10 days here...well, Washington is part of Costa Oeste Socialista.

I could have picked up my S&W model 25 Monday, if I could drive (legally) but my left arm / hand are still in a brace from surgery. So, my 10 day wait became a 16 day wait. I could have actually picked it up Sunday except the store was closed...”CoVid hours” they call it. They are normally open 7 days a week.
So, I pick my .45 Colt non-SASS bad mother (watch your mouth) Saturday.
I am very stoked!

Two weeks does seem a bit excessive.

It's a ten-day wait, as in ten business days, meaning two weeks' actual time. A Washington carry permit used to give you the privilege of picking it up the same day, but last year the FBI decided to take that away as they felt WA didn't do a thorough job with their instant background check system.

Initially I ordered mine from a dealer listed on gun.deals that had the lowest price, but as soon as I placed my order he e-mailed me to say he didn't actually have any in stock and that it would take at least nine days to get some in before he could ship it out. I told him to cancel and I went to Midway which was a bit higher, but they offered free shipping and it was at my LGS two days later. BTW the first seller still says "in stock" on his website, so as always don't trust the small hole-in-the-wall sellers offering the best price to actually have any inventory.

Here in my area of CA dealers are now charging a $75 fee for gun transfers if you buy from somewhere else and have it shipped.

Several gun shops near me charge exorbitant amounts for a transfer. One even charges you 10% of the price you paid on any firearm they could've ordered in for you instead. This same place also charged $3000 for new Colt Pythons last year, so yes they're trying to make a lot of money off people. The guys who run an FFL out of their house often only charge $25 or so, but I'm a bit leery of them. The shop I used charges $49 and I was fine with that. I did of course have to pay state sales tax as well, even though it was an out of state transfer.

6gun, I like it!   A lot!!

This is interesting.

Yeah, I watched that while waiting for my new toy to be shipped. He explained how the guts in the Model 3 American are basically the same as the Schofield model, which doesn't bother me since the originals were so temperamental the US Army didn't buy any more after the first thousand. The Russian models, and later the Schofield and New Model 3 incorporated several design improvements over the first Model 3. I don't think anyone buys an Uberti-made replica expecting it to be a 100% correct recreation of the original anyway, as long as it looks right on the outside.

Yeah I know. It's the same reason why I don't fret over the fact that my 1873 levergun is a .357 Magnum or that my 1866 is a .45 Colt and not .44 Henry Rimfire. While it would be nice if there was substantial parts interchangeability between the originals and the Uberti replicas I'm not losing any sleep over it.

Nice purchase. Too bad about the wait.

When the Shields came out there was a large rush to buy. I did my ppwk and left with the gun before a crowd did that was already waiting for their instant background check to clear. I had a CCW and the other folks did not which expedited things. There were some angry looks from the group.

Well, the good news is that the two week wait ended up being only a few days, as I got the "proceed" call today. I hot-footed it back to the LGS after work and picked her up.

The bad news is that while doing the initial cleaning and inspection I discovered a defect inside the barrel. One of the lands is buggered up halfway down the bore, like the tooling chattered a bit. I can feel the roughness while pushing a patch down the bore. And yes I scrubbed it really well just to make sure it wasn't some sort of fouling. So now I have to decide how long I'm going to put up with it before I send it back to Cimarron for repair.

Aside from that though, she's a beaut. I did notice the bluing isn't as bright and blue as on my Uberti Schofield, but I didn't get a chance to take a comparison pic before it got dark.

It's California.  Of course it's excessive.

My FFL guy called and said it had just come in.  I told him I'd be there in a half an hour (It actually took 33 minutes.  I did the paperwork and was back home two hours after I got his call.

Took it a local indoor range a day or so later and found out there are some things that don't get better with time; not shooting is one.  The gun did its part, but I fell short.

Looks really nice, Forty Rod. I have a question for you though... how tight is the lockup on yours? Mine has a bit of play when it's latched, not a lot but just enough that it will rattle when shaken. Not sure if it's something to worry about or not.

After some checking I have decided it's transitional model in an unoriginal caliber.....But I don't care!  I may continue the search for someone to remove the nickel and CCH the trigger and hammer, but that isn't all that important, either.

Doesn't rattle but there is an approximately .01 play in the cylinder rotation.  Doesn't concern me a lot.  Also have a very slight issue with the plating in exactly the same place on the cylinder over the chambers.  Another WGABRA feature.

Ok, great... I guess I'll have to mention the sloppy lockup as well when I send mine in for the defective rifling.

BTW I saw another Model 3 on Gunbroker just a few numbers away from mine. Looking at the pics I could see the fitting of the slideplate was awful and the checkering looked like a 3yo did it. As much as I love Uberti for bringing back these old guns for us, they really need to up the quality control a little.

BTW when I mentioned "lockup" I was referring to how snug the barrel and frame are when latched together, not the cylinder lockup. On mine there is some cylinder movement, but that's rarely ever something that bothers me. I've never owned a revolver that had zero cylinder movement. It's just the tightness of the latch that concerns me because I don't want the revolver to beat itself up whenever I fire it. On my Schofield there is almost no perceptible movement of the barrel and frame.
