I'll add three of my own, the first is a Stephen Grant side lever; second is a J. Burrows and the third is a Charles Boswell

Oh, now you went and hit me in my weakest spot.  I love fine bird guns.  And, those fine old exposed hammered doubles....Oh my....Oh my!!

I just imagine myself on a driven pheasant shoot with a bunch of pheasants coming over the trees and the determined thumbing back of those elegant hammers on one of my Purdeys.   I prefer my loader to not cock the gun, don't you know. -_-

You would be surprised, the market for hammer guns is relatively inexpensive.  The Stephen Grant, even with shipping and buyer's premium was about the same as a new Miroku or Uberti 1873 and Stephen Grant is a fairly high end maker.   The J. Burrows had the chambers lengthened to 2 3/4" and was re-proofed for smokeless powder at the Birmingham Proof House before it found it's way the the United States.  I shoot 2-3 rounds of skeet with it just about every Sunday.

I will say to anyone considering an antique shotgun, do your research and read the description of the condition very carefully.  I only buy from dedicated firearm auction houses that I've dealt with on a number of occasions.  And remember, there are no spare parts or replacement stocks, if something needs fixing it will have to be made by hand and that's priced accordingly.

I bought a Remington 1878 "Lifter" 12-ga Grade I about 7 years ago.  For $195 I had a fun shooter.

Hammers were close and the gun was tight.

Hate that I sold it.

Been keeping my eye open for a similar gun.

A very quick search suggests brass  can be made by shortening a .43 Spanish case:  http://castboolits.gunloads.com/showthread.php?158726-10-5-x-47r
