As mentioned in another thread, I’ve been binging on westerns, primarily from the 50’s & 60’s. Jack Elam shows up in a lot them. One of my favorite character actors of the genre, who is as comfortable as a villain as eccentric good guy.

Who’s yours?

I always liked 'Mose'....

First time I saw him was in The Searchers....

He is always a great role!

Dub Taylor, he is the only guy to tell John Wayne's character to, "You go to Hell John Henry" and not get beat up[.

Walter Brennan;  villain, good guy, clown.  He did them all.

Ben Johnson, the real deal.

Wilford Brimley;  now that he’s gone I’m expecting calls from casting companies offering me his kind of roles.  Trying to get my waistline up to the correct size.

let's not forget Wes Studi, Adam beach, and Russell Means.  Studi can convince you that he is most evil person alive.

Not “Westerns” but period pieces... But I believe the only villain I’ve despised more than Wes Studi in The Last of the Mohicans was Tim Roth in Rob Roy.

I was recently surprised to learn that Ken Curtis was in at least two Gunsmoke episodes as baddies before he became Festus.

Did you ever hear him sing?  One of the original Sons of the Pioneers.

When we first moved to California in 1976 we started looking for a house to buy.  Carefully considered one that had belonged to Andy Devine.

Slim Pickins got his first job in westerns because he could drive four up and six up teams of horses.

I heard that Andy Devine was hired for the same reason.

Blackwater, that is the OFFICIAL legend.  It seems to be true in the case of Devine, but I don't know if it's been verified for Pickens.  I met Pickens at a gun show in City of Commerce, CA about 1978.  Also met the guy who played Radar on MASH, Sue Ane Langdon, and Dub Taylor there at the same time.

Yep.  Three Duke Wayne movies, best of which was The Searchers

We had an LP, when I was growing up, that a mix of singers.  SofP sang two songs on the long-ago album.

Ken Curtis replaced Frank Sinatra when Frank left the Tommy Dorsey band to go on his own.  He then replaced Roy Rogers on the Sons of the Pioneers when Roy became a cowboy star replacing Gene Autry who left the movies to join the military during WWII.
