Alpo
If you were going to plant a fruit or a nut tree in your yard, would you put it in the front yard or the backyard? Would it make a difference if the yard was fenced? Would you put it near the house? Just walking the dog around the neighborhood, there is one house with two orange trees in the front yard, that pear, which is in the front yard, a pecan in the front yard, a grapefruit in the front yard right next to the house and a lemon in the back, an orange in the front yard right next to the house, and an orange in the front yard right next to the house. Then there's my house, which currently has a fig tree in the fenced backyard, prior to the hurricane had two pecan trees in the fenced backyard, and back when I was in high school had two plum trees in the fenced backyard. My next door neighbor has an orange tree and a banana tree in her fenced backyard. I don't believe I would put bearing trees outside of a fenced yard, because there are two dang many fruit thieves running around. Three blocks up the street there's some people that have a fenced backyard, and have an orange tree in it, with the tree right up close to the fence. Several times I have seen people in the city right-of-way, outside the fence, picking her oranges. Two blocks away from him is a house with a fenced yard with a lemon tree in the corner, and I've seen people up against the fence picking his lemons. Allie Mo, SASS No. 25217
Definitely in a fenced yard. We had a wonderful nectarine tree in an unfenced back yard in Sacramento. An A$$ climbed it to STEAL fruit and broke the main branch.
sassnetguy50
Agreed. In the fenced yard to prevent damage to the tree and climbers.

Finagler 6853 Life
My wife has them planted all over the yard. Front yard, side yard, back yard and that wasn't enough she started planting more down by my shed. We don't fence in anything. If someone wants the fruit bad enough to get down our 200 yard driveway, can get it and get away, well I guess they deserve to keep it. No one has tried in the 25+ years we've lived there. Critters? Birds eat the cherries, coon eat the peaches and pears. Deer prune up everything and eat anything they can reach. There is enough for all to get some. We give away most of it to other relatives anyway. She just likes the idea of growing things.
Ramblin Gambler
Front yard. We have pecans and now figs out there. Wildlife will be the biggest fruit thieves and I'd rather them be in the front yard. Besides, pecans are bad for dogs. I don't want them watching squirrels eating them and getting ideas.

That's where the old saying "Shaking like a dog passing peach pits" comes from.
