Moving to Phoenix area, need local advice

Phoenix Mike

Recommended Posts

I am retiring soon and am actively looking to move to the Phoenix AZ area. Can some kindly folks offer advice on what Old West living history groups and venues are in the area? Are any venues exclusive of tourists either day or at nigh for the purpose of total immersion?  Funny thing is I currently live in Phoenix  ....Maryland, and work in Texas   ....MD.  Also with encroaching socialist control, how endangered are gun rights in the area?  I don't want to move from one socialist state to another in progress.

 Thank you kindly.

I live in Tucson, but G&A has it right. If you have a CCW, (shall issue) there is NO NICS check, no waiting period. Open carry is legal, and CCW WITHOUT permit is too.

State preemption means that no city or county can pass stricter laws.

It does get HOT!!!  in the Summer, but Winter is nearly non existent. You can find older cars because they basically DON'T rust away.

I would worry more about the traffic in Phoenix than gun rights.

Old west history can be found in Wickenburg (45 minute drive), Prescott (1.5 hours), Fort Verde (45 min) as well as Tombstone, a little touristy but still steeped in AZ history. A little more commercial (great if you have a shopper wife) are Cave Creek and Scottsdale. Also don't miss the Heard Museum in downtown Phoenix and the Scottsdale Museum of the West. All that is just the tip of the iceberg, plenty more to discover by poking around and asking your new Arizona SASS friends. Contact me for more info on getting started in Cowboy Shooting if you are interested. Best of luck in retirement.

There is the Pioneer Museum just north of Phoenix.

I, too, have been casually looking at AZ. I'd prefer somewhere farther north though. Maybe, Prescott Valley or Chino Valley.

There is nothing in Chino Valley but wind Allie.  Prescott is the nicest of the Tri Cities but Prescott Valley isn't too bad.  Prices are way over valued right now too.

Jim, Hubby (nor I) doesn't like NV due to the wind. Thanks for the info.

There is no wind in AZ. I checked with the Chamber of Commerce.

I live about 5 miles west of CV in Williamson Valley (actually in the hills). Love it!

Prescott Valley Town government sure beats the Prescott City government hands down....and we are growing bigger than Prescott.  Check us out.

I had the pleasure of moving here from Texas over 20 years ago, liked it so much I stayed. This state is truly one of the Last old west places left. I’m in Far East Mesa by the Superstition Mountains. Ghost towns, gold mines, wild horses, lakes and mountains and some of the purtiest sunsets you’ll ever see in yer life. Certainly don’t recommend any place with “Phoenix” in the address but there’s plenty of Gilbert’s, Mesas and Chandlers to settle into

And I live about five miles from IR. This was my view a week ago.

Yes, real estate is inflated. It has been for decades. Pick a place a little farther out and prices go down. But we are in the top ten places to retire. Yavapai County has three SASS clubs.

Lived in Mesa from 1985-2018, retired and moved south to a secret location. Love the weather and the lesser traffic. The older I got, the less I liked the heat of the summer. Back when Phoenix hit 122 degrees, I worked in an outside steel shop as a welder/fitter and believe me, it was the pits.

When we narrowed our choices for a retirement location, Payson and Prescott were tops on my list. We made several offers on different places in Payson, but just couldn't seal the deal. Phoenix area generally had just too damn many people and too hot. We ended up in SW Colorado and just love it.

Allie, your thoughts and ours are identical.

So far, I have 169 properties in an Excel sheet for the Prescott metro area.
I'm on a realtor distribution list...

And not one single place meets our needs 100%.
A few were close, but no cigar.
All are VASTLY over priced.
I pull the deed info on the parcel and find many are bumped up $200k over what they sold for 3~5 years earlier.

Add in the property tax rate of this inflated sale, and AZ income tax, and you have a whopping increase in your costs.

It appears to me, the gov't is going to Californicate the entire nation, not just the big welfare states.
The Democrat gun-grab legislation now pending applies nationwide.
This onerous slam to gun owners will hit just as hard in MO and TX as it does in CA.

In short, there is nowhere left to run.

We started looking 20 years before we retired and after looking at around 50 properties, we decided we wanted to build our own home for once. That way we could get what we wanted. Ended up buying 6 acres with 5 shares of irrigation water. Found a great contractor and spent a year (before I retired) working with him on our house. We love it and would not do anything any different.

Having lived in Mancos, you can't beat Dolores. It is beautiful there. Lake McFee is huge. The high country is minutes away. If I wasn't still working I would want to move back to my happy place.

Wow. My old HVAC instructor live right there. His name was Carl Bessimer (sp?) He lived on the east side of 666 about half way. He was a great teacher at San Juan Basin Vo-Tech. I have missed him over the years. That was 34 years ago. I also used to take lapidary classes from Mr. Sanchez just north of Cortez. Last time we were through there we stopped in and I think we spoke with his daughter. Good times.
