Back to Work Unemployed at 64 Back to Work!

Marshal Hangtree

Recommended Posts

Well, I just got laid off this morning.  Now I have to get back in the job market.  Slim pickin's around here for Manufacturing Engineers.  The really crappy part is we just closed on our new house about 2 months ago.

But, even if I have to work 3 Walmart jobs, I refuse to lose or leave our new home on Buzzard Hill.

May have to put some cowboy guns on the market.  Never know.

Later, y'all.

That’s a bummer. Hope things work out. I’ve got a feeling there’s going to be a lot of that over the next few years.

Praying for new employment for you. Praying for our nation. Got a bad feeling that with a bonanza of cheap labor and foreign imports coming soon and the loss of cheap energy and good energy industry jobs we are going to see some economic hell around the corner.

Try to hang in there. Hopefully something will come along to get you thru. Try not to sell your things, the money only lasts a short while and then you don't have your stuff either. Wishing you "Best of Luck" Marshall

Thanks, all.  We'll make it somehow.  I wonder how I'd look in one of those orange Home Depot vests?

The good thing is I'm still in relatively good health, but my wife's health is a different matter.  I have to go find something with decent health insurance quickly.

Ain't it funny how layoffs always seem to immediately follow getting married, buying a house/car, having a baby, etc??? Been there, done that myself... :(

Keep your chin up and don't make any rash moves too soon. For example, don't sell off your guns until you actually need to. I made that mistake as well.

They’d probably make you a dept manager at Home Depot or maybe a store mgr!!

Bummer. I'm unemployed now as  well. Company basically forced me into retirement. Kept cutting my hours and then telling me that what I was doing wasn't really necessary. Fried my grits, so I just told'em I was done:angry::(

Marshall, I know it is very difficult  to deal with losing a job in your 60s.

I also know that a manufacturing engineer with 30 or more years of experience has something to offer to employers. Obviously the situation in your area is not good or you wouldn't have been laid off, so you do have to broaden your area; even if you have to commute to a decent job, its better to use your expertise that to consider Walmart or Home Depot....not that they are bad, but you can do better.  Whatever you have to do to keep that dream house...as you said.   I did a quick internet search and found over 500 jobs listed for manufacturing engineers in Alabama.

I'd never try to tell you what to do .....or to oversimplify the situation, but I do want to leave you with the idea that you have valuable skills and experience and I believe you can find a business that needs you.

God Bless you and your wife. .

Don't assume so.  I've been fired twice - once for being three weeks from being vested in the profit-sharing plan.  The second was trying to cut off my eligibility for my pension (the new idiot CEO actually sent out a memo to the department heads telling them to consider getting rid of their older employees).

Howdy,

Look at it this way....400,000 died this year just from the c19 virus.

One of those jobs has to be the one you are best to fill.

The last time I got laid off I took a few classes and got a job programming

computers.

If I wasnt laid off I never would have got a way better job.

That whole company is gone now.  Leaving early was the best thing.

Get a spiral notebook and start listing your skills.

Somebody needs those skills....and you.

Best

Retail can be misery, but it can also be a paycheck. Been there, done that. I've also had to swallow pride and pain and sell guns I didn't want to sell. I don't know that I can offer any advice that hasn't already been offered, other than to point out the obvious. Since you were laid off, you should have unemployment coming to you. As an engineer you have an analytical mind and the ability to focus. Utilize those assets to come up with a plan, and move forward. It may be that Home Depot will be a stopgap while you are looking for better. There's no shame in it. I ended up in retail selling firearms, as a lawyer, because I ended up in private practice at a particularly bad time.

You and your wife will be in my thoughts and meditations. To lighten things up for you a little, if all else fails, you can do what I have threatened to do many times over the years.

Marshal, sorry to hear about your situation but realize what you have.  You are a skilled engineer with knowledge of how parts, assemblies and products are made, knowledge of equipment and processes, and the ability to perform in a high-paced manufacturing environment.  No recent grad has that.  No one coming across a border has that.  Get a linkedin.com account, post your resume and get some recent coworkers to rate your skills.  Headhunters live on linkedin.

It may take awhile but there are opportunities.

Our local area is always needing prison guards, Loomis armored car needs reliable people as does our local casino.  Substitute teachers were always in demand but I don’t know how COVID has affected that job area. Good Luck, Irish ☘️ Pat

At age 58 I became a (shiver) Federal employee after nearly 20 years of self employment/entrepreneurship.  It was the right time and opportunity for me. When I retired at age 69 my home and cars were paid for, and my health insurance is adequate and relatively inexpensive.

Don’t limit your opportunities.  Be willing to move if it’s advantageous.

Howdy,

The country is in dire need of repairs to all sorts of things.

Just buy a new one only works so long.

Ive had several things repaired lately.

I drive a good way to the shop.

I had to send a watch clear across the country for repair.

One fella is trying to retire and his repair shop was never busier.

I cant have a decent conversation with the guy due to phone calls.

He gets things working better than new and has decent prices and

he is a Bears fan.  He just converted his two car garage to a shop.

I hope he never retires for real.

No idea how far to the next real quality repair shop.

He says he gets customers from 200 miles away often.

Gotta screwdriver??

Best

Try door dash and Uber eats, dont laugh some of these drivers are making $1000.00 a week delivering food! You can still look for a job while your doing this.

On the positive side, the Postal Service is badly under-staffed and is hiring like mad right now. They'll take virtually anybody cognizant who can sort mail or drive a mail truck regardless of age.

On the negative side, listening to what my ex says about USPS it sounds like Hell with fluorescent lighting.

This is absolute truth.
After you have sold everything off, the bills still keep coming in.

Either increase the revenue or reduce the expenses...

Marshal, apply for Unemployment Insurance.

Thanks, Allie.  That's the first thing I did when I got home yesterday.  First time in my life that I've applied for unemployment benefits.

That sucks. Near Huntsville? Might want to keep an eye out for the government and DoD contractor engineer positions there.

At 64, you should go ahead and apply for Social Security as well!!  If your lack of employment contiues, the extra income will stand you in good stead.

You can still work when a position becomes available and the money you would lose at the higher rate received for retiring later will be somewhat offset by the paychecks you get now!

You may find that the comfort level you experience now was worth the difference!
