H. K. Uriah, SASS #74619
Not wishing to hijack another, and excellent thread on some specific revolvers that have them, I just wanted to say that in general I think that octagon barrels on a pistol look really cool. Granted, the SAA never had one back in the day, but some others did, and there's nothing that prevents us from having Colt Clones with a stop sign shaped barrel. The oldest one I have is factory conversion Remington 58 in .38 Long Colt And this one's a Uberti conversion I did myself, another .38 Another Uberti. This one is a .45. Another .45 Conversion. This one's a recreation of the Rogers and Spencer revolver. A really unusual and cool pistol. An 1860 Colt, converted to .32-20. Granted, this is not the original barrel, but I do find it interesting how cap and ball era pistols seemed to have octagons a lot, but when they switched to cartridges, round ones became the norm. But customization allows for anything. That's my Big Iron. Armi San Marco frame, Pietta 1860 grips, and barrel from a Rossi 92. So much fun to shoot. What do others think? Do you like revolvers with barrels shaped like a circle or a stop sign? Oh, I almost forgot. It IS a pistol after all.
The Blarney Kid
I like octagon barrels on the guns that originally had them, but prefer round on the original styles. You can get a octagon barreled peacemaker with Pietta's El Malo.
Captain Bill Burt
I would love to get a set of Ruger’s in 32 H&R mag, get Jimmy Spurs to do a full race job on them and have octagon barrels swapped on.
Widder, SASS #59054
I've had about 4 or 5 sets of Vaqueros with Octagon barrels..... all of which were installed by Snake Oil George in Oklahoma. I consider him a master machinist. When I ask for 3" barrels, he also cut the ejector rod and ejector rod housing appropriately, beveled the edged real nice, and beveled by cylinder. Really great work. ..........Widder
Oklahoma Dee
I agree with H.K. Uriah and Widder. Although I have not shot an Octagon barrel in some time, I finally succumbed to the desire to have Octagon barrels on my pistols, by the living legend - Snake Oil George. I still am a big fan of blued barrels and so it took a special type of material to make octagon barrels that could be blued. Snake Oil George took the time to make them correct, with a Front sight of my desire as well. Be they rounded or octagon barrels, quality work it takes for the final product. Many thanks to Snake Oil George and his lovely wife. Oklahoma Dee
Boomstick Bruce
My main match guns. Stainless Uberti 58's, 5.5" barrels with Kirst conversions and Mason ejectors in 45 colt, wolff saa springs and TOTW hawken rifle sites that I modified to fit the dovetails that are nickel and brass. Rancho Roy
Didn't all 1871 / 72 Colts have Octagon barrels. I have a pair of Uberti 71s with Octo barrels in 38spl.

Plus a lot of the smaller pocket guns like the 1849.
Colorado Coffinmaker
R. Roy NO. 1871/72 Open Top are/were round barrel guns. At some point in time, someone has mounted/fit 1851 Richards Mason conversion Barrels on those frames.

IMHO, of course, the extra weight of the octagon barrels helps me stay on target. When I fired these in matches with the old barrels my misses were all over the top misses, now I rarely miss with them and my hits are pretty much in the centers of the targets. So IMO, there is an advantage to heavier barrels.
