Another cap option

Recommended Posts

This is a little work, but it gives us c&b guys an option w/ slix nipples and CCI #10s.

1. 1/4” OD clear tubing - cut these w/ dykes to make a cap keeper.  Cheap for 10’ at Home Depot.

2. CCI #10s are 0.005 smaller than Remington #10s.  See Mako’s cap chart.  The tubing keeps the caps on and mitigates the not so ideal fit up to slix nipples.

Interesting thought and idea...First question, they stay on but are there any problems getting the caps to go off?? Have done enough test fires to give a good account to their working???  Any plastic left to clean off??

This is not a new idea,  before the new nipples we use the idea of making rubber bands and place them around the caps.  Yes it does work but the band has to be thin and placed before you get to the range.   For most people it is to difficult and time consuming to do at the loading table.  But yes it works very well.  Bullett 19707

Again...posted as another option to not having caps to use our beloved c&b pistols. If you don’t like it or have seen it before, move on.  I’m interested in helping my fellow frontiersmen.  If you choose to be negative, then you are the problem with this wire forum.

No,  it's a great idea.  And cost effective alternative to the store bought ones off eBay that are $11/100.

I'm assuming you can put them on at home ahead of time.  It may be a bit clumsy to put them on with my big fat fingers at the loading table. I seen some tubing about like that here on the farm somewhere.  Tube maybe off a goldfish bowl aerator?  Maybe too old and brittle now.

The good part is as you’ve said it keeps pards shooting in these lean times.  The bad- like loading paper cartridges time consuming and tedious, also I don’t know of a capper that would work.  Otherwise if it was a choice of this or not shooting I’d choose this.

TL,  I did a test on the deck with just caps. They all went pop on the first try. The caps w/ the tubing stayed in place perfectly with a touch of black but not burnt or melted.  No plastic residue left over.   The caps were easily removed with my screw knife.  The unkept caps, being smaller ID, come apart quite nicely and become prime candidates to jam the cylinder.

Do you try to recover and re-use the tubing?

Yea I like the stick idea for seating.  I’ve seen the picture posted earlier this year.  Nothing about c&b loading is efficient. So placing the cap and then seating with my antler will work fine.  I have ~1000 remmie 10s left before I have to resort to this.  With any luck, Remington will be up and running again

Hey Tucker  :)

Just in case you aren't aware, Remington Ammunition is no longer a part of nor attached to what was Remington Arms.  Remington ammunition/Cap production is now under the corporate parasol that owns and operates:  CCI,  SPEER,  FEDERAL. and now Remington.  As the entity gets caught up, we should start to see Caps back on the shelves.

Yea.  I have thought about calling and see what the deal is so we can plan ahead.  May have to figure out some sort of group purchase so us c&b guys can get our rem #10s.  I think I have enough for this years big matches.  Kinda kicking myself for not buying that case earlier before this stupid pandemic hit.

I saw REM 11s at the local Bass Pro. Will they work?

Yes, the only difference between REM #10 and #11 is the 10's are slightly taller and go on the nipples a little deeper. Get SLIXX nipples if you can.

  • 2 weeks later...

My experiment with DYI cap keepers didn't work out well.  I made 12 up.  And shot two cylinders.

1805431324_CapKeeper1Jan2021.jpg.0a6b1d75715c0403296fa7a05a286b49.jpg

By the third shot, the gun was jammed.  The first cap ejected out of the keeper.  You can see the next cap just jumped back with keeper.  The cylinder hopelessly jammed on last shot.  I took it in and took it completely apart. Two pieces of cap fell out.  I had completely disassembled and cleaned it after last shooting session so the cap parts must have came off this cylinder full.

661620096_capkeeper2Jan2021.jpg.0597a7ee45e267484594e1623ccc2cb9.jpg

One cap on the second cylinder load jumped out of the keeper.

I ran two more cylinders with no keepers and caps busted and fell away.

One thing the two that jumped out of the keeper had was that were shorter than the rest. I noticed when I was slicing them off the tube that I was getting different lengths.  But decided it would be a good test.  Short didn't work. But even the long ones didn't always work. (I did push them on with an antler like I would do.)

The tube I bought was also. 1/4" od. X .017 id.

Warden, ol' buddy, I gave my cap keepers the old college try.  I agree with you.  CCI #10's and make shift cap keepers are a no go.  I tried using some refrigerator water line, 0.25" OD /0.17"ID same as the clear tubing above.  Giant PITA.  Slix nipples are definitely Rem #10 only.   I put 60 balls through one pistol to test.  There were times I went three times around the Ruger.

1. First try: the caps stayed on.  No jams, but couldn't seat them well enough to go bang on first try.  Here are the caps on the gun and then when removed from the nipples.

2. This one blew the back of the cap out and jammed up the ROA.  Weird.

In conclusion, CCI #10 percussion cap with a cap keeper is NOT match worthy.  I tried the refrigerator line (much stronger) and the PVC tubing with a relief cut into the cap to allow easier seating on the big nipple.  Both were not what I would use for anything other than attempting to conjure a migraine.  All in all, it was a 55°F day in the middle of January in Nebraska and I got to go outside w/o losing a digit to frostbite.  I'd do it again tomorrow if mama didn't have plans for us.

Thanks to all for watching this thread.  I'll have to try something else to spend my time this winter.  I have all of these CCI #10 caps?

I just got the CCI #11 magnum caps and they fit really good on Slix on the Rugers. They're a little shorter than Rem 10s. Seem to act the same. Haven't shot alot yet, but chrony says it adds over 100'/sec so you could adjust and save some powder.

I have been really impressed with how clean this Grafs FFG powder has been burning.  I run water through the barrel and brush in and back out and it's substantial done.  I flush and brush a couple more strokes just for good measure.  But it may be due to the CCI or RWS caps.  The RWS seem to be hotter.  At least they look like the explode with more energy.  I have video I shot when I was testing them.  Maybe I can catch them going off.

I have never tried them so I have zero idea if that makes a difference or not.

Well could be we tried the wrong tubing.   The tube I bought was really soft and pliable - like used for medical use.   I have some hose that came with a dehumidifier that is not nearly as flexible but it was too big.
