The First Nurse on the Front Line of Iwo Jima Checking over her kit of medical supplies is Ensign Jane Kendiegh, USNR, a Navy flight nurse, as she flies from a base in the Marianas to the Iwo Jima battleground, aboard a Navy transport plane, March 6, 1945. Miss Kendiegh was the first navy flight nurse to set foot on a battlefield at 22 years old. The evacuation mission lasted until March 21, 1945. These brave women were able to rescue and attend to 2,393 marines and sailors. When Kendeigh returned to the US, she participated in a War bond drive. Shortly after, she was requested to return to the Pacific. On April 7, 1945, Kendeigh landed and served at the Battle of Okinawa. She was the first flight nurse to arrive at Okinawa. Jane also served on battlefronts in Marianas and Hawaii. After the war, Jane returned to Lorain, Ohio. She married Lt. Robert Cheverton, USN, an air-evac Pilot, on February 14, 1946. They had 3 daughters. Jane continued to pursue her nursing career after leaving the Navy, and was well thought of in the San Diego Medical Community Jane died from cancer in 1987 in San Diego. She was 65 years old.
