Forty Rod SASS 3935 Posted December 24, 2020 Share Posted December 24, 2020 When we were on Okinawa the AFRTS TV station ran an announcement of a high speed vehicle approaching the island and followed it all the way in with frequent reports and updates of the USAF interceptors going to intercept it, Army Nike-Hercules and HAWK missile sites tracking it (I worked at the 30th Artillery Brigade Nike-Hercules / HAWK Missile Support center), Marine and Navy actions, and the whole shebang. All military were to be on standby alert status until further notice. The target was not responding to commands to veer off and land at Kadena AFB. Radar images couldn't ID it as any known aircraft, everyone was preparing to fire on it if necessary................and every kid on the island was screaming "THAT'S SANTA CLAUS. DON'T SHOOT SANTA DOWN." Finally the announcement was made, and gun camera images shown, that the vehicle had been positively identified as a well known celebrity from the North Pole and was being escorted in by Air Force jets. All viewers below the age of fifteen were ordered by the "commanding general" to go to bed and stay here until after reveille on Christmas morning.
