Subdeacon Joe
"It was in the early tumultuous days of the battle of the Bulge when Kurt Vonnegut is captured by the Germans while serving as Recon/Scout attached to the doomed 106 Infantry Division. He spends the rest of the war as a POW. Vonnegut is in the city of Dresden during the fire bombing of February 13/14 1945. This traumatic experience is the backdrop of his famous book Slaughter House Five. After the war he became a peace activist and successful author. My favorite book is Welcome to the Monkey House. It's a collection of his short stories." J-BAR #18287
I especially enjoyed his collection of commencement addresses: “If This Isn’t Nice, What Is?” Wish I could have heard him give a commencement address.
