The Super Iron Cowboy Match

Here's an idea that I thought I'd run up the flagpole to see if anyone salutes.

Here in New England, a couple of clubs used to occasionally hold what was called an "Iron Cowboy" match.   Instead of the typical 10-10-4+ stages, they would be 20-20-8+ scenarios.   This would be done by using 2 main match rifles, 4 main match pistols, (two worn, two staged) and a whole mess of shotgun targets, which may or may not have been split in multiple shooting locations, but you would still use only 1 shotgun.   I've not been to one in a few years now, but it was always fun.   Instead of 6 stages over the course of the match, there would be 3, sometimes 4, but just as much shooting as at a normal match.  The order of the day was, "Bring what you have, borrow the rest."  Most pards had enough guns of their own, but everyone would bring extra ammo to loan out their own guns if someone didn't have enough of their own stuff to shoot.

Okay, here's the idea for the "Super Iron Cowboy Match."

50 Rifle

50 Pistol

25+ shotgun.

You would need 5 Main Match type rifles, loaded with 10 rounds each.   Five pairs of pistols, two worn, four pairs staged.  The shotgun targets would likely have to be split up, and you'd need to take it with you from SG place to SG place.  Or maybe two shotguns could be used.   Bring what you got, borrow the rest.

In the end, you get a whole match's worth of shooting crammed into 1 mega stage.   I think it would be fun to try, more fun to watch, and require a lot of attention to be paid by the spotters.

Yes,  there would be some logistical challenges with loading and staging the guns.   Yes, there would be a lot of work to collect the brass.  Everybody who is not loading, shooting or unloading, helps work the stage.  I think it could be pulled off.

Any takers?  :)

Nope not me.  I’d have to borrow guns, I shoot BP most around here don’t and I don’t want to shoot other people loads.  So, while an interesting concept IMHO I think most wouldn’t want their slicked up, prized guns shot by a lot of folks.

we call it Iron coyote

10 lever rifle  rounds

10 round from sass pistols

4 rounds from pump shotgun

28 rounds from 4 mags in 1911

10 lever rifle rounds at "long range" target  {30 yards}

6 rounds from SxS shotgun

the first shooter staged all guns them self  ,, very slow

next shooter we had 2 helpers load and stage guns  .. this worked out fine

we made targets simple  nevada sweep with 3 targets for rifle and pistols

Sounds like a nice variation.   There are lots of ways to mix this up.   Make the second rifle a "rifle" caliber one.   Add a derringer or pocket pistol, or single shot rifle.  Use a mix of long and short range targets.   But I like the Coyote variant a written just fine.  :)
Question:  Since everyone gets to use the 97, is the magazine loaded up with all 4, or is it still a glorified single shot?

getting old is pain.. I forget we started with 2 or 4 rounds from a " Belly gun "

yes the long range target was shot with a " rifle " caliber

I have written several "super stages" with 4 pistols, 2 rifles and multiple shotgun positions...

Then this whole virus garbage fired up and ammo got scarce.

I'll wait for a better time.

Might need that ammo for sumptin else...

how about standard gun loadout with on the clock reloads.  Staged ammo if not able to carry all on person.  make it a challenge where you don't expect to be able to get to all the targets in the time allowed, maybe take the best of 2 runs for your score since a gun malfunction in a single super stage could be much more devastating than in one of 5 matches.  Can load a shotgun tube, but not move with ammo in the gun.  Score based on either time to complete, or number of targets hit before time expires.   Have a stage set up with a ammo wagon in the middle, after every fire sequence, table guns, run to ammo wagon, resupply for next string, retrieve guns reload and proceed, have a limit to how much ammo can be retrieved each time.   stuff like that.    Also, it should finish with a mounted Gatling gun sequence

It looks like you would almost need to allow shooters to pair up when registering. This would allow folks shooting .45s to buddy up with another 45 shooter for example to cover the numerous guns needed.

In Oregon we call it a true grits shoot and have it at Merlin OR.  You can shoot it with cowboy guns or wildbunch.  Bullett 19707
