Trailrider #896
In WWI, the 94th Pursuit Squadron, was made famous with its Hat-in-Ring insignia by Capt. Eddie Rickenbacker. In the late 1960's, at Malmstrom AFB, MT, the 94th Fighter Interceptor Squadron (FIS) had the Hat-in-Ring emblem...on its F-106's! That was a sight to see! Three Foot Johnson
During the 1979 Labor Day parade in the tiny town of Dillon Montana, two F106's of the Montana Air National Guard made a scheduled flyover, but inexplicably at an altitude MUCH lower than was normally authorized for such fly-by's - less than 100'. One of the jets clipped the grain elevator and crashed into an oil refinery storage facility a couple blocks beyond. Captain Rude's ejection was unsuccessful, and he died in the crash.
