Hardpan Curmudgeon SASS #8967
Anyone know how to remove a Cerakote finish? Sassparilla Kid found an extra barrel for his 1948 vintage 16 ga Model 12. The finish was a good match for the gun, but unfortunately, it had a messed-up Poly Choke on it. He removed the Poly Choke, then sent it to a 'smith to have the muzzle cleaned up. Well, somewhere along the line instructions got mixed up: when he got it back, the barrel had been turned down at the muzzle and was wearing a Cutts Compensator as well as a Cerakote finish. Uh... Notwithstanding it's good qualities, the Kid does not like Cerakote on a classic firearm. Well, he didn't charge the Kid for the job. But now the Kid is thinking of sending the barrel to Briley for a proper choke - although it will be pretty short; after removing the Cutts, the barrel is now 24 1/16". If cut to the step it'll be 23 5/16", which might be okay for dove shooting (non-lead ammo only in California). AND he's now looking to re-finish the entire gun so everything will match. He also has a Mosin that was "accidentally" Cerakoted... he's wanting to strip and blue that one, too. So - suggestions on removing the finish?? Pat Riot
Sand blasting, well, media blasting is the only way I know of. Solvents will not do it. Anyone that does Cerakote can remove it for you. I doubt that they would charge much.
