Sedalia Dave
Iconic Arecibo Observatory radio telescope collapses after cable broke. Quote A huge radio telescope in Puerto Rico that has long played a key role in astronomical discoveries collapsed on Tuesday, officials said. The Arecibo Observatory, made famous as the backdrop for a pivotal scene in the James Bond film "GoldenEye" and other Hollywood hits, had been shuttered since August after an auxiliary cable snapped and caused a 100-foot gash on the reflector dish. Linn Keller, SASS 27332, BOLD 103
Saw that. I don't think they're going to rebuild. I understand Red China has one big enough to make Arecibo look like a watch fob.

Dawg Hair, SASS #29557
Very sad indeed. I was able to visit the place a couple of times. The size of the reflector dish is three times a football field. One heck of a big radar. I think you had to have a masters degree in astronomy just to sweep the floors. Junior PHD's got to make the coffee.
