Yeah, but the A's had Allison engines, not Merlins. The Merlin and the Mustang didn't come together until the C's, if I remember correctly. The reason the Air Commando got them is the same reason that the Red Tails got them in North Africa- they were altitude limited fighters capable of ground support and they were available.
