Looking for More 44-40 Ammo Box Dates

Recommended Posts

Howdy again,

I had a few folks help out a while back but I am at a dead end and need some more help.

I need all ya'll 44-40 ammo box collectors to check the ink code on the inside of the flap. I am trying to put together a large data file on 44-40 Winchester and Western box date codes.

What I have so far is in this public Doc. 44-40 Ammo Box Date Codes

Below are a few photo examples.

Thanks!!

There is a Book called One Hundred Years of Winchester Cartridges Boxes 1856-1956 .

Ray T, Giles & Daniel L, Shuey

Hope this helps.

Thanks Baily but I have the book as well as the WRACo books Vol I and II. They don't get into the date codes of late, only the early label dates. I already know how (with some exceptions) to translate the late codes. What I need is for folks interested, to look at their later 1928 to present day boxes for the actual code on the box as in my examples.

I really thought all these cowboy shooters that using factory ammo would be interested but I can certainly understand if they are not. It is a weird hobby...lol!!! The later boxes are just as hard to find as the older ones. I just can't afford to pay $75 or more for each box just to get a code of of it...that desire would cause my wife to have me committed

I have a Winchester Box 44-40 . Cant remember when i purchased it, 40 yrs or more.

It has $6.25 on Box.

The numbers you are looking.

514LM1

The Box doesn't have the stirafoam the new ones have.

It has a sleve you pull out. Same material the the Box is made of .

I have Ballone Head cases been thinking of loading them and putting them in Box .

Thanks Baily this gives my brain a work-out!

It is hard to translate that one not seeing the box, hard to get the year. If the format is LM1, it could be 1 November 1936, 1946, 1976, 1996 or 2016. The box graphics would help narrow the year. You said you got it 40 or more years ago so that rules out anything newer than 1980.

1936 would be the late "1932" blue non-mercuricc box

1956 would be the late "1954" red and yellow box

1976 would be the Winchester yellow-X

If the format translation is incorrect, I would need to see the box, or you describe the box "colors"/features to re-evaluate the sitcheation!!!!

Don’t know if this will help, as the number stamp appears to be incomplete and I am late to the meeting.  As far a I can remember, these were purchased sometime in the mid 1990’s. I normally reload but could not find brass at the time.

I could use some help for the Winchester "1948" box. These red and yellow boxes have been divided into three groups by collectors. These collector's names have been around for years but it has only been recently that the box codes have been broken, reveling actual packaged dates.

  • "1946" - The 1946 box can be dated up to 1948ish. They should all carry the caliber code of K4412T on the end labels
  • "1948" - The 1946 box ( I have yet to see one) should bare the caliber code K4412C on the end labels
  • "1954" - The 1954 box shows the Olin Mathieson call-out on the red side label.

The new caliber code of W4440 was changed by 1953. Also note that one box example still bares the Olin Industries call-out with the W4440 caliber code on both the yellow side label and both box end labels and dates to 1953. I have seen one box example that dates to 1955 but only has the W4440 caliber code on the yellow side label, not the box ends.

The caliber code change from the "T" (denoting a pistol caliber), to the "C" (denoting a rifle caliber) was made by 1948.
