remember it well , although i was not a big fan of his politics i found this entertaining and felt it made just the right humorous impact without loosing sight of the serious topic , have quoted various lines quite often throughout life - get a lot of blank stares , but i just keep waitin for it to come back round on the guitar ,

Maybe that’s cuz you haven’t been drafted and gone through the physical. It was a unique experience I’ll not forget. ;)

Maye it's because the movie and the song suck? ;)

Never saw the movie.

Didn't mean to poke at you. The song was a product of its era and unless one was a young adult at that time, it's pretty meaningless. Outside of that context, it does suck.

But I still think it's hilarious!

Ah, I didn't see it as "poking". No biggie.

I remember  the movie coming out and all the raves it received and then I saw it in 1981 aboard ship when I was in the Navy and all the guys that served during Vietnam were all excited about the movie being played on a Sunday afternoon.  I watched it and was pretty much sick of all the "Nam" stuff at that point so I was not into it at all. Then over the years it somehow became a "Thanksgiving Tradition" to some folks. To me it's just  an annoyance that seems to come around every year at this time.

Most of you probably recall the infamous 18 1/2 minute gap in the Nixon White House tapes as revealed during the Watergate investigation. I heard Arlo tell a long, funny story some years back.  Seems he ran into Jimmy Carter’s son Chip who told him that he was rummaging around in Nixon’s old record library in the White House one day and found a copy of the Alice’s Restaurant album. Chip speculated that perhaps one evening, under siege and seeking solace from his many weighty problems, the President grabbed what he thought was a blank tape and recorded the title track. Later, on realizing that he’d actually taped over something possibly important, he erased the song, which as you also may know runs a bit over 18 minutes. The rest (may be) history.  :)

It may come as a surprise to some, but not long after 9/11 Arlo switched to the Republican Party.

that does surprise me - i never heard that , good for him , saw the light it seems .........

thats a really big switch for him - his dad was really pro union , depression era union , i understood that , why i respected him and one might have to really study the DFL to realize they are now communists beyond the unions and socialism of that earlier pre-kennedy era , i think most of us of my age - younger than or about the age of  arlo would admit to at least understanding if not sympathizing with the unions back in his fathers day - even after till the 60s maybe ? thinking haffa era , when it became evident the unions had problems ,

i enjoyed that movie - ill ot say it was the best of the era but i will always say i enjoyed it immensely , i  enjoyed that one side cut on that album and owned it back then , even with his slipups in the lyrics you couldn't miss the intent , it made a statement

kinda like the woodstock event made - there is no other way to say it out loud - a statement was made whether you agree or not , i was one  who was welcoming VN vets home with flags and thanks , i was raised that way ,  but i was also watching the communists takeover of the democrat party , not a pretty sight to me
