Would you trade a Glock 26 for a Colt Detective Special?

A month ago to the day I found someone on Armslist that wanted to trade their Colt Detective Special for a Glock 19 or a G26. The photo of the Colt looked good and they claimed that it only had 100 rounds through it.
I PM’d them and offered my Glock 26 that has Tru-Glo TFX night sights, and an extended extended mag release and takedown bar. It would come with 9 magazines, a set of Glock tools some Mag accessories and to sweeten the deal, 150 rounds of PMC 115 grain FMJ ammo.

I really wanted that Colt. I have wanted a Colt Detective since I was a kid. I just never or rarely came across any for sale and when I did they were always priced too high...if you are thinking right now that “I see Colt Detectives all the time for $400.” Keep it to yourself. I won’t believe you anyway. It’s a myth. Seriously, I don’t want to hear it.
Anyway, I loved old detective movies and shows. By all rights I should have grown up to be a cop, but I decided to play with trains.
I loved Sgt Joe Friday’s Colt. I loved all those old black and white movies and newer TV shows featuring the Colt Detective Special like; The Untouchables, Superman (hell, even Superman feared the Colt...he ducked!) The Man From UNCLE, Mission Impossible, Hawaii 5-0, Columbo

Movies like; Casablanca, Dillinger, Naked City, White Heat, The Asphalt Jungle, Hong Kong, The Big Heat, On the Waterfront, to name a few.

Anyway, just like the prior couple of deals I tried to make on Armslist it turned out to be a sham. Screw Armslist. Done with that mess.

I had posted about this on another forum I frequent and asked if the question in the title of this thread. Overwhelmingly everyone responding said “Yes”, but it was not to be so and the thread drifted down the page to begin fading away into digital obscurity.

Then a little over a week ago a guy on that forum PM’d me asking if I would offer him that deal on my G26 for his Colt Detective Special? Long story short and many PMs back and forth we have a deal! :D

Since Kalipornia has so many laws and restrictions on gun owners even though we are in the same state he cannot ship me his Colt because it’s “off roster” (not approved by the DOJ as “safe”) We have to transfer face to face, person to person at the same FFL. I can ship him my gun via FFLs as it is “on roster”. So, I am shipping him my gun and he is coming down to visit family after Thanksgiving and we will transfer his Colt to me. We haven’t solidified the dates yet.
If I transferred my G26 to him here he would have to come back 10 days later to pick it up.
What a PITA!

Anyway, bottom line is I am actually finally going to get my Colt Detective after many many years. :D I am pretty jazzed about it. B)

The really cool part...my Colt was actually used and carried by a Monterrey County Sheriff’s Office Detective. It’s got some holster wear, but I don’t care. I think it’s pretty darned cool. It even has the holster the Detective used, though it’s left handed, but that’s okay. This will not be a carry gun anyway...at least not in this state.

Merry Christmas to Me! ;)

I picked up a nice second series DS at the gun show this past weekend.  $850.  My buddy has a third series, like yours, on sale for $1075.  Monetarily, you got a screamin' deal.

For use, in the real world, maybe not so much.

Glad you struck this deal. Armslist is notorious for bogus deals.

BTW - I found one a few weeks ago at a small local gunshow for $600! 1974 vintage, third issue in excellent condition (at least on the outside - haven't checked the internals yet). I bought it for my wife to carry as she cannot rack a semi auto. She shot my neighbor's Detective Special and really liked it so I was very lucky finding it.

My problem has been finding 38 ammo. I have been able to scrounge some, a partial box from the same gunshow and three boxes from a local estate sale. I do have some brass and bullets coming and the same neighbor has the reloading equipment so I should be good.

Yes I would but I’m a big Colt fan. The DS looks good!!

Thanks. My wife knows me well. She said “Since you’re getting this Colt are you now going to go on a Colt binge?”

I said “No, but I have always wanted the same gun Barney Fife carried. A Colt Official Police...and a Colt New Service in .45 Colt would be cool...”

She smiled, rolled her eyes and walked away. :D

The approved list doesn't apply to used guns in a PP transfer.

True but you have to do it at an FFL and it has to be in person. Both people have to be there. He is coming down from the Monterrey area.

Only because you both are PRK hostages.

Out of state to you is different.

Post pictures when you get it.

Good for you!  I just acquired a Colt Lawman III subnose from the estate of a cowboy friend.  I carry a Glock 26 with a  Glock 19 magazine daily and I wouldn't part with it, but I love my newly purchased Colt Lawman.

During a gun photo session for an article at a local gun shop in Indiana three people came in with a Glock to sell or trade. The gun shop owner took them because they would sell again but said something along the lines that 100 years from now no one is going to pull a Glock out of a sock drawer and show the great great grandkids what their ancestor used but they will still be pulling Colts out of sock drawers and still get ooohs and awwws.

I hear that logic a lot from people that don’t like Glocks.

I always laugh and say “Yeah, but you’ll be dead, so how the hell would you you know anyway?”

That usually shuts em up.

The gun can be shipped to your FFL for transfer.

OLG

Not if it’s “off roster” it can’t. Only guns on the roster can come from out of state and be transferred. In state “off roster” can only be transferred person to person, face to face at the same FFL. An “off roster” gun cannot be transferred from a seller to a buyer from one FFL to another FFL.

The more I write the “stupider” this all sounds.

Two years, two months, eleven days...

Something I forgot to mention is one of the reasons, besides getting one of my “grail guns”, that I am happy to trade my G26 is that my right wrist takes a bit of a beating when shooting that gun with stock magazines. Being as my right wrist in the thumb joint area is quite arthritic shooting that pistol holds no joy for me. Sure I can use longer mags with adapters to get a better grip but that kind of defeats the purpose of conceal-ability.
I don’t have and won’t have a CCW here anyway so I got that going for my decision. Besides, I would rather have a Glock 43 or an S&W Shield for CCW anyway (can’t get those here in CA)

Just don't shoot +P's in the DS as it's not rated for plus P's.

If you shoot it a lot it will go out of time. A lot of us old timers

would go to the range and shoot SA mode and never know the DA

was out of time until needed!!

Oh, I wouldn’t shoot +P ammo in it. Actually, I rarely shoot +P ammo, but if I do it’s not from .38 Specisl chambered revolvers. I would shoot it from .357 magnum revolvers, but I rarely buy it and I don’t load for it.

How much is “a lot” in regards to shooting it often and the timing issue?
Would shooting it single action keep it from having timing issues?

Thank you.

I had one of these third-series Detective Specials, made in 1974, that looked just like your photos.  I sold it for $650, without a box, in 2016.

Looks like you got a good deal.

Mine shot well with standard 158 lead loads.

You can transfer a not on roster gun from parent to child or child to parent if the party transfering the firearm is not a CA resident.  That is how my CA resident son & daughter get not on roster guns.  They are gifts from mom & dad.  I have a gun collector friend in CA that would love to own some post micro stamping requirement for models not on the roster at the time it was required.  The only way I see to do it is 1st give it to one of my kids & they sell it to him in a FTF transfer at an FFL.  To much of a hassle & involves two CA check fees & FFL's transaction fee plus NV's 7.75% & approx 10% CA sales tax.

P.S. He has said he plans to retire to Gran Junction CO in the next year so the circuitous means of acquiring a SIG 365 isn't going to happen.

Different market up here.

A Detective Special in good condition, is only worth somewhere in the $200 to $300 dollar range, as a result of them becoming Prohibited (due to the short barrel) unless you had continuous prior registration several decades ago.

A Canadian version Glock 19 Gen 4 with a slightly longer barrel and a Maple Leaf on the slide, will set you back $796.00
