The Story Behind John McCrae’s “In Flanders Fields” poem

Not many still remember, if they knew at all, what the poppies signify.  My dad made us read and remember the story every year on Veterans Day and Independence Day and every other day when our flag was flown proudly. .   I regret that I didn't carry this on to my kids.

Maybe it's not too late to tell them the story so they might pass it along.

Thanks, Dave.  :FlagAm:

they may have started to disappear with the passing of the WWI Vets:blush:

When I was a kid WWII vets sold them.  Mama always bought one for her and one for me.

All money collected by the Royal Canadian Legion for selling the poppies goes to Veterans' aid.  Due to COVID they said that the sales of poppies this year dropped dramatically, mainly because the Legion members and the military cadets who do the selling were not allowed due to mingle within the public due to COVID.

My VFW post distributes poppies on 11/11 and Memorial Day each year. We do not sell them but if folks want to give a donation we accept it with thanks.

Obviously that’s changed this year. Hopefully in 2021 things will get back to normal.
