Utah Bob #35998
Winter Memories! As I get older it seems I get colder When the gold Autumn leaves start to fall I seem to remember in former Novembers I wasn’t much bothered at all The strength of my youth now seems quite uncouth When those chilly north winds start to bluster Instead of bravado I’m now just a shadow And a shudder is all I can muster I recall long ago being fond of the snow From my head to my strong ski boot buckles I was king of the north as I bravely went forth Braving sub zero blasts with a chuckle After skiing all day I’d chase shivers away With a warm toddy down and a cigar And a Scotch on the rocks as I dried off my socks By the fire with my Gibson guitar But the thought of a spill on the side of a hill That’s all covered in white stuff and frozen Sends a chill down my spine when I think of the time That’s exactly the path I had chosen Cross country skis, snow shoes through the trees And climbing up cliffs was a buzz With my ice axe and my gun, I thought it good fun Cause the Army insisted it was So now I think back on those days with a pack And the crazy and wild things I’ve done I had a fine time with some good friends of mine Guess the army was right. It was fun!
Tex Jones, SASS 2263
Very nice. Did you ski the Zugspitze? We had a group, the Selbstmord Zug, (suicide squad) that used to go up there on the weekends. Forgot their names, but we had a 2nd LT from NM who had never skied before and he had no problem pointing himself to the steepest slopes and going hell for leather. How he survived was a mystery. You're right, it was lots of fun.
