Writing his memoirs really demonstrated the character of Grant (as if his wartime service was not enough). He was basically broke and he worked tirelessly on his memoirs while dying of cancer in an effort to make money to support his family after he was gone. He finished the work very shortly before he died in 1885. The memoir turned out to be a great success and, as he hoped the money it brought left his family financially secure.
