bgavin
Q: can a stainless lever (RPP, etc) be cold blued to "tone down" the brightness? I prefer stainless over blue or nitride because it is more durable and less prone to rust. However, a stainless lever will probably look out of place on a blued 1894. Birchwood-Casey and Stockdoc both make high quality cold bluing products.
Null N. Void
Some bead blast the finish to tone down the shiny.
Joke 'um
Maybe some flat black "plastisol" dip. That's the stuff they sell for dipping tool and valve handles. Tough, but it can be peeled off when you want your bling back.
Pat Riot
I do not think bluing will work but you can Cerakote it. Bluing is a form of rust. Stainless doesn't easily rust so therefore it wouldn't easily Blue.

Utah Bob #35998
I spilt some on my stainless Vaquero. No effectat all.
Trailrider #896
The only thing I can think of that MIGHT work would be black hard chrome plating. Not sure who would do that, if it can be done.
Sixgun Sheridan
IonBond will work as a form of "bluing" for stainless. Might be a wee bit expensive though for a single part.
bgavin
Thanks for all the replies. I looked further into black nitride finish, and found it is very tough are durable. Somebody in another forum mentioned that RPP might be moving away from gun parts, so I wanted to get their 1894 loop lever before that happens. DeaconKC
Brownells Alumahyde works well on stainless and is available in a lot of colors.
J. Mark Flint #31954 LIFE
Hit it with some Prussian blue machinists ink and let it dry. It'll discolor and fade and wipe off over time, but you can always do it again.
bgavin
Many thanks for all the thoughtful answers. I need some Prussian blue to help identify the friction points in my actions. I opted for the black nitride finish because it is a very tough finish. I have every confidence this loop lever will be top quality, like the other goodies I got from RPP for the Marlin.
